4. GEAR CASE OIL

Inspection:
1) Place the outboard motor on a level surface and position
the outboard motor vertically (with the gear case level).

2) Check for metal particles on the magnet end of the drain

plug bolt.
3) If there are metal particles on the magnet end of the drain
4
plug bolt, disassemble the gear case assembly and check
the following solutions (Section 11).

• Check for water in the oil. If there is water in the oil, the
water will flow out first when the drain plug bolt is
6
removed, or the oil will be a milky color. If water in the
gear oil is detected, perform gear case pressure check (P.
7
11-46).
4) Coat a new O-ring with clean gear oil and set it on the oil
8
drain bolt.
Install the oil drain bolt in the gear case and tighten the bolt
9
to the specified torque.
TORQUE: 6.5 N . m (0.7 kgf . m, 4.8 lbf . ft)

5) Remove the oil check bolt and check whether the gear case
oil flows out of the gear case. Catch the oil in a suitable
11
container.
Replace the O-ring with a new one on reassembly.

6) If the oil does not flow out, add the oil.

7) Coat a new O-ring with clean gear oil and set it on the oil
check bolt.

Install the oil check bolt in the gear case and tighten the
bolt to the specified torque.

TORQUE: 6.5 N . m (0.7 kgf . m, 4.8 lbf . ft)

Adding Gear Oil:
1) Place the outboard motor on a level surface, and position
the outboard motor vertically (with the gear case level).

2) Remove the drain plug bolt.
3) Install a commercially available gear oil pump in the oil
18
drain plug bolt hole.
Replace the O-ring with a new one on reassembly.

4) Remove the oil check bolt and add the oil through the oil
drain plug bolt hole until the oil flows out of the oil check
20
bolt hole.
Replace the O-ring with a new one on reassembly.
Recommended
gear oil
5) After adding gear oil, apply clean gear oil to the new O-
rings, and install them on the drain plug bolt and the oil
check bolt.
Install the drain plug bolt and the oil check bolt on the gear
case, and tighten them to the specified torque.
TORQUE: 6.5 N . m (0.7 kgf . m, 4.8 lbf . ft)
