INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Please refer to the diagrams located at the front of this instruction manual.
The following instructions are applicable to all HME/HumidiFilter devices. Please refer to
additional instructions for your specific device later in this manual.
Device Handling
Handle the devices carefully and with clean hands. Wash hands after handling the devices, as they
contain substances that may be irritating to skin and eyes.
Breathing
When you begin using the HME/HumidiFilter System, a slight increase in airflow resistance may be
felt. This resistance is a normal function of the devices that may require a period of time to adjust. If
breathing through your HME/HumidiFilter System is difficult, remove the device and consult your
medical professional for assistance.
Coughing
It is recommended that the HME Cartridge, HumidiFilter Holder and ATSV II with HumidiFilter Cap
be removed prior to coughing.
Removal from Housing or Tube
Removal and attachment of any devices worn over the tracheostoma should be done with the user
positioned in front of a mirror in a well-lit room. To remove the device, hold down the previously
applied tracheostoma housing or tube with one hand while grasping the device (diagram 1C-a)
with your other hand. Pull the device carefully until it releases from the housing or tube.
HME Cartridge
The HME Cartridge must be replaced at least once a day to maintain proper function of the
HME system.
1. Insert the HME Cartridge into the tracheostoma housing or tube and gently push the HME
Cartridge until it snaps into place (diagram 5). A properly inserted HME Cartridge will sit flush and fit
snugly inside the housing or tube.
2. Tracheoesophageal speech with a voice prosthesis and HME is produced by pressing down on
the EasyTouch speech button (diagram 6). You will feel the speech button completely close. Upon
manual release, the EasyTouch speech button returns to its open, breathing position. Note: If the
EasyTouch speech button is not completely closed, there may be difficulty voicing or a whistling
sound.
Cleaning the HME Cartridge
The HME Cartridge is designed for 24-hour use and is not designed to be cleaned, disassembled/
reassembled, or reused. Mucus may be wiped away with a lint-free cloth as able. If the HME
Cartridge should become heavily soiled, remove it and replace it with a new HME Cartridge.
HumidiFilter Holder
The HumidiFilter Holder is designed for repeated use. The HumidiFilter Foam Filter must be replaced
daily to maintain proper function of the HumidiFilter system.
HumidiFilter Holder Assembly and Insertion
1. Insert the HumidiFilter foam filter into the holder. The HumidiFilter should lie flat in the holder
(diagram 7).
2. Insert the assembled HumidiFilter Holder into the previously applied tracheostoma housing or
tube and gently push the holder until it snaps into place. A properly inserted HumidiFilter Holder
will fit snugly inside the housing or tube. You should be able to breathe without difficulty through
the HumidiFilter.
