ENGLISH
Make sure that the construction allows sufficient air flow into and out of the motor at the designated inlet and outlet
points. Ensure that there is free space of at least 100 mm, for frame sizes 80-160, and 180 mm, for the other motors,
at the motor air inlet.
1.5.2.3 Safety considerations
The machine is intended for installation and use by qualified personnel who are familiar with the health and safety
requirements and national legislation. Safety equipment necessary for the prevention of accidents at the installation
and operating site must be provided in accordance with local regulations.
WARNING:
Points to observe
1.
Do not step on the motor.
2.
The temperature of the outer casing stator surface of the motor may be too hot to touch during normal
operation, and especially after shutdown.
3.
Some special motor applications require special instructions.
4.
Be aware of the rotating parts of the motor.
5.
Do not open terminal boxes while they are energized.
6.
Low-voltage motors in a variable-speed operation.
1.6 Standard motor operation
1.6.1 Introduction
HDP motors are intended to operate by default from a single frequency converter supply and not to run in parallel
from one frequency converter. Instructions given by the converter manufacturer shall be followed.
Additional information may be required by ABB to decide on the suitability for some motor types used in special
applications or with special design modifications.
1.6.2 Winding insulation
Variable speed drives create higher voltage stresses than the sinusoidal supply on the winding of the motor.
Therefore, the winding insulation of the HDP motors is designed to withstand these stresses.
When required, the filter at the converter output has to be dimensioned according to the following rules.
Selection of winding insulation for ABB converters
In the case of ABB, e.g., AC_8_ _-series and AC_5_ _-series single drives with a diode supply unit (uncontrolled DC
voltage), the selection of winding insulation and filters can be made according to the table in Section 6.4.
Selection of winding insulation with all other converters
The voltage stresses must be limited below accepted limits. Please contact the system supplier to ensure the safety
of the application. The influence of possible filters must be taken into account while dimensioning the motor.
1.6.3 Connection of thermal protection
All the HDP motors are equipped with PTC thermistors or other type of RTDs in the stator windings. Connecting
those to the frequency converter is recommended.

DO NOT CARRY OUT WORK ON THE MOTOR, CONNECTION CABLES OR
ACCESSORIES SUCH AS FREQUENCY CONVERTERS, STARTERS, BRAKES,
THERMISTOR CABLES OR HEATING ELEMENTS WHEN VOLTAGE IS APPLIED!
