The continuous adjustability of the lateral apertures allows setting of
an individual exhalation resistance. This can be used to increase
oxygen saturation in the blood, if necessary.

Use of the Valves for Weaning
In patients, who have been ventilated with a tracheostomy tube for
a longer period of time, weaning from the tube may be made easier
by using a TRACOE phon assist I speaking valve. When weaning,
the points mentioned in 4.2 must always be borne in mind.
Caution: the TRACOE phon assist I speaking valve must under
no circumstances be used for weaning in combination with a
blocked tracheostomy tube, as although the patient can still
breathe in, breathing out is impossible. This would lead to
hyperinflation of the lungs (air trapping) and possibly very soon
to a life-threatening situation for the patient.
When using fenestrated tracheostomy tubes with a cuff, the
cuff must be fully deflated before the speaking valve is fitted.
The enclosed warning label must be applied to the connector
of the speaking valve and/or the inflation line of the tube to
indicate the correct use of the speaking valve.
The possibility of opening the valve during weaning training means
that air trapping can easily be avoided.
The patient must be monitored during use of the valve.
4.5
Further Information
If oxygen is to be supplied through valves REF 650-SO, REF 650-TO
and REF 650-TO-C, care must always be taken to ensure that this
is humidified and that the upper airways do not become dried out.
The width of the lateral slots should also be taken into account here.
We recommend that at least one spare valve is kept available at
all times.
If the function of the valve is impaired by mucus, the valve should be
removed and cleaned.
