The instruments are designed for stationary installation. They
are available in the following designs:
– Explosion-proof instrument (Ex d)
The flameproof, explosion-proof housing provides three
¾ " NPT connections which can be used for field wiring,
direct connection of a sensor, or wiring of a remote sensor.
– Instrument for increased safety (Ex e)
The instrument is supplemented by an increased safety
terminal box (docking station) providing up to four 20 mm
connections for field wiring or wiring of a remote sensor. If
the cable gland from Dräger is used, the permissible cable
diameter is 7 mm to 12 mm.

Intended use
The instruments of the Polytron 5000 family are intended for
continuous monitoring of the ambient air.
Instruments with a relay module and additional local alarm
activation can trigger warnings and initiate countermeasures
without a controller.
A controller must be connected for safe operation in
accordance with TÜV 19 ATEX 8435 X and
TÜV 22 UKEX 7076 X. This also applies if all relays are
connected, because the fault relay is not activated during
maintenance. In any case, the analog output must be
monitored, as a special state could be indicated by a current
flow between 0 mA and 3.5 mA.
The instruments are designed for permanent installation and
are approved for use in hazardous areas.
– Polytron 5100 EC is a combined intrinsically
safe/explosion proof instrument for continuous monitoring
of toxic gases or oxygen in the ambient air.
– Polytron 5200 CAT with catalytic DrägerSensor DQ or LC
is an explosion-proof instrument for continuous monitoring
of combustible gases and vapors containing hydrocarbons
and non-hydrocarbons (e.g., hydrogen or ammonia) in
ambient air.
– Polytron 5310 IR with infrared DrägerSensor IR is an
explosion-proof instrument for continuous monitoring of
combustible gases and vapors containing hydrocarbons in
ambient air.
– Polytron 5700 IR with PIR 7000 is an explosion proof
instrument for the continuous monitoring of combustible
gases and vapors containing hydrocarbons in an
appropriate atmosphere.
– Polytron 5720 IR with PIR 7200 is an explosion proof
instrument for the continuous monitoring of carbon dioxide
in ambient air.

4.1.1 Mechanical installation
4.1.1.1 General information on mechanical installation
– Local, state, and national rules and regulations that
govern the installation of gas monitoring equipment must
be strictly observed.
– The physical properties of the gas or vapor to be detected
and the details of the corresponding application (e.g.,
possible leaks, air movement/drafts, etc.) must be taken
into account.
– The future use of accessories and maintenance
equipment must be considered.
– The free gas or vapor flow to the sensor must not be
obstructed.
– The instrument must not be exposed to radiant heat that
will cause the temperature to rise beyond the indicated
limit values ( Temperatures). The use of a reflective shield
is recommended.
– A dust cap may be attached to the cable entry of the
instrument. This cap is neither explosion-proof nor
watertight and must be removed before connecting the
instrument to a sealed conduit or before installation of a
flameproof cable gland.
– Unused openings must be closed with sealing plugs. For
the required tightening torques for cable bushings, cable
glands, plugs and sensors, see 15.8 Tightening torques.
– For non-conduit installations, an approved cable gland
must be used (e.g., Hawke A501/421/A/¾ " NPT or
equivalent).
– WARNING: Only for conduit installations: To reduce the
risk of ignition of hazardous atmospheres, the conduit
must be sealed within 45 cm (18 ") of the housing.
– CAUTION: If the gas detector is connected to controllers,
the total response time may be delayed. The entire
measurement path must be taken into account (e.g.,
latency of the controller). Ensure that the required
response time is kept.
