Calibration

Span calibration
8.8.1 General information
®
Polytron
5310 IR-specific:
Owing to the design of the DSIR gas sensor, the output signal
of the gas sensor is limited to 45% . . . 55% of the instrument's
internal supply voltage. If the gas concentration continues to
rise after the upper limit of the sensor's output signal has been
reached, the values reported by the instrument to the
controller and displayed there will not increase. For
substances with particularly low adjustment factors or manual
configuration of a high span adjustment factor on the sensor,
this may already be the case at concentrations below
100 %LEL. Therefore, when using surrogate gas for
adjustment, the test gas concentration matching the alarm
threshold should therefore be used to check whether the
alarm is triggered correctly. If necessary, the displayable
measuring range can be increased by reducing the sensor
output signal according to the requirements and then
adjusting it on the instrument (see section "Manual span
calibration of the output signal" in the DSIR gas sensor
instructions for use).
8.8.2 Performing a span adjustment
Prerequisites:
– Adjustment is prepared.
– The zero-point has been adjusted.
– Specifically for all Polytron 5xx0 except the
Polytron 5100 EC:
The last valid zero adjustment was no longer than
24 hours ago.
– Polytron 5310: The correct gas category is selected.
All instruments except the Polytron 57x0 IR
1. Select SPN-Adj and confirm with [OK].
 The maintenance signal is transmitted via the analog
interface. No alarms or fault relays are switched.
 The current value flashes on the display.
2. Apply the test gas.
● Set the gas flow corresponding to the sensor used
(see "Gas flow for adjustments", page 16).
All sensors except for LC sensors:
Apply the test gas to the sensor until the displayed value is
stable, but for no longer than 3 minutes at a maximum.
LC sensors:
Apply the test gas to the sensor for 3 to 5 minutes until the
displayed value is stable.
Then continue with the adjustment.
3. Tap [UP] / [DOWN] to set the desired value.
4. Confirm with [OK].
 The sensitivity of the sensor is adjusted and the menu
is displayed again.
5. To return to measuring mode, tap [UP].
6. Turn off the gas flow and remove the calibration adapter
from the sensor or disconnect the hose.

Polytron 57x0 IR
1. Select SPN-Adj and confirm with [OK].
 The maintenance signal is transmitted via the analog
interface. No alarms or fault relays are switched.
 The display alternates between GAS - type and XXX,
the current gas code for the test gas.
2. Check the gas code.
● If the value is correct, tap [DOWN].
● If the value is not correct, tap [OK]. Use [UP] / [DOWN]
to modify the value and confirm with [OK].
 The reading on the display alternates between GAS
and unit.
 The current unit is shown at the bottom of the display.
3. Check the gas unit.
● If the value is correct, tap [DOWN].
● If the value is not correct, tap [OK]. Use [UP] / [DOWN]
to modify the value and confirm with [OK].
 The reading on the display alternates between GAS,
CONC and XXX, the sensitivity value of the previous
adjustment.
4. Check the gas concentration.
● If the value is correct, tap [DOWN].
● If the value is not correct, tap [OK]. Use [UP] / [DOWN]
to modify the value and confirm with [OK].
 The reading on the display alternates between
continuous dashes and GAS - ON.
5. Apply the test gas.
● Set the gas flow corresponding to the sensor used
(see "Gas flow for adjustments", page 16).
● Tap [OK].
 The reading on the display alternates between
continuous dashes, CAL und XXX, the current gas
value.
Apply the test gas to the sensor until the displayed value is
stable, but for no longer than 3 minutes at a maximum.
Then continue with the adjustment.
6. Tap [OK].
 If the adjustment was successful, the reading on the
display alternates between CAL and OK. Otherwise, it
alternates between CAL and FAIL.
– If [OK] is not tapped again within approx. 5 minutes,
the instrument returns to measuring mode and the
reading on the display alternates between CAL and
FAIL.
– Tapping [UP] cancels the adjustment. The menu is
displayed again.
7. Confirm with [OK].
 The sensitivity of the sensor is adjusted and the menu
is displayed again.
8. To return to measuring mode, tap [UP].
9. Turn off the gas flow and remove the calibration adapter
from the sensor or disconnect the hose.
