General information
– Before connecting the instrument to the power supply,
connect the wires for the relay and connect up the sensor.
– Before starting the instrument in measuring mode, check
whether the configuration and adjustment settings are
correct.
In order to guarantee its safe operation according to
TÜV 19 ATEX 8435 X and TÜV 22 UKEX 7076 X, the
following standard alarm settings for the instrument must
1)
remain unchanged.
:
– The relays must be set to Normally energized and the
alarm A2 (main alarm) to Latching and Non-
acknowledgeable or Pre-Acknowledgeable.
– Alarm A1 (pre-alarm) may only be set to
Acknowledgeable if used for activation of an acoustic
alarm device.
6.2
Commissioning the gas detector
1. Switch on the power supply.
● Polytron 5100 EC
 The display shows the remaining time in minutes
until the sensor is ready for measurements (e.g. t
016).
● All other Polytron 5000 instruments
 The display shows 301 until the sensor is ready for
measurements.
 The instrument performs a start-up sequence
(LCD/LED test, software version, and initialization).
1) Does not apply to the Polytron 5100 EC

The sensor warms up. The maintenance signal on the
4 to 20 mA interface remains until the sensor has
warmed up. The length of the warm-up time depends
on the type of sensor and the ambient conditions.
Maximum warm-up time of a new sensor: see
instructions for use of the sensor.
 The fault relay signals an error.
 After the sensor's warm-up time, the instrument
switches to measuring mode. The current gas
concentration and the unit of measurement are shown
on the display. The green LED is lit.
2. Polytron 5200 CAT: Adjust the zero-point and the
sensitivity.

Operation
7.1
Control panel
The control panel contains
– buttons for navigating in the menu
– a display
– LEDs and associated symbols
The buttons for navigation have different functions depending
on the menu that is in use.
The instrument is operated with a magnetic wand. To do so,
the enclosure lid must be in place on the instrument. If the
enclosure lid is not in place, the magnetic wand may activate
two or more buttons at once (cross-talk).
7.2
LEDs and symbols
The following symbols and LEDs can be found on the control
panel:

LED status
– If alarm A1 (pre-alarm) has been triggered, the red LED
will flash once
– If alarm A2 (main alarm) has been triggered, the red LED
will flash twice
– If an alarm is acknowledged before the reason for the
alarm has been rectified, the red LED will light
continuously to indicate that there is a fault.
NOTICE
The alarm trigger function is only available on
instruments with relay module.
