General safety notes
Dear Customer,
We thank you for purchasing a Volkswagen Zubehör
(Volkswagen Accessories) bicycle carrier. Adhere strictly to the
work procedures and safety notes described in the assembly and
operating instructions. We accept no responsibility for damage
caused through non-observance of the instructions.
Caution!
Please carefully read the assembly and operating instructions before
starting assembly. Non-observance can cause serious injuries/death to
you and others.
Caution!
A bicycle carrier for a towing hitch is only suitable for the transportation
of bicycles. Only bicycles may be transported whose total weight does
not exceed the maximum permitted load, the drawbar load and the
D-figure in conjunction with the carrier (see page 5). Only a maximum of
two bicycles may be transported. The bicycle carrier is not suitable for
use offroad.
Caution!
The towing hitch must be suitable for use with a bicycle carrier.
D-figure for ball head of towing hitch at least 5.3 kN, see type
plate of towing hitch.
Material of trailer hitch is at least St52-3 (see type plate on trailer hitch).
Maximum payload for bicycle carrier and drawbar loading of towing hitch
are never exceeded. Maximum permitted total weight and permitted axle
loading of vehicle must never be exceeded when using a bicycle carrier
with/without bicycles (see vehicle Owners manual). A bicycle carrier for
a towing hitch is not suitable for a towing hitch with an aluminium ball
head (towball).
Caution!
Secure bicycles evenly loaded and with lowest point of centre of gravity
on bicycle carrier. Secure bicycles also to bicycle frame and secure front
and rear wheels of bicycle using tensioning straps to stop wheels falling
off. Secure bicycles on bicycle carrier against falling and rolling off.
Fit heavier bicycle close to vehicle and lighter bicycle (i.e childs bicycle)
furthest away from vehicle on bicycle carrier. Remove following from
bicycle before loading on carrier: child seat and loose articles such as
drink bottle, saddle bags etc. Do not cover bicycles with, for example,
tarpaulin or other protective covers. Load heavy loads in luggage
compartment as far forwards as possible in vehicle to prevent tail-heavy
loading.
Caution!
If load projects more than 40 cm (15.7 inches) beyond the light surface
of the side-marker light or rear light of rear carrier system, the load must
be marked by, at side with a white light facing forwards and a red light
facing to rear and positioned a maximum of 40 cm (15.7 inches) from
edge and a maximum of 1.5 m (4.9 feet) above road surface. Distance of
rear tights, indicators and reflectors (not triangular shaped) to outer
contour of vehicle must not be more than 40 cm (15.7 inches).
Caution!
When transporting bicycles, mark projecting wheels with extra markings.
When travelling at night, cover light reflectors, reflectors and wheel
reflectors of bicycles so as not to distort rear light picture of vehicle. Not
covering might otherwise hinder, deceive or endanger other road users.
Caution!
The vehicle user is responsible to ensure their own vision and hearing are
not impaired by the load and that the load does not adversely affect
the driving condition of the vehicle. The vehicle user must ensure
that the vehicle and the load are loaded correctly and that the
roadworthiness of the vehicle is not adversely affected. Prescribed
lighting and lighting equipment must be fitted and operational during
daylight.

Caution!
After fitting and driving approx. 20 km (12.5 miles), check assembly
and correct seating of bicycles and readjust as necessary. Check all bolts
and fittings of bicycle carrier and bicycles after fitting, before and after
each longer drive, tighten and/or readjust as necessary and check again
according to these instructions. While driving, regularly check in rear
view mirrors for possible undesired movement or shifting of bicycle
carrier and/or bicycles. For irregularities, drive on at vastly reduced speed
to next possible stopping place and check, readjust and retighten all bolts
and fittings on bicycle carrier and/or bicycles. When driving over poor,
uneven road surfaces, check all bolts and fittings of bicycle carrier and
bicycles at shorter intervals. For non-observance, bicycle carrier and/or
bicycles may become loose/fall off and endanger you and other persons,
or cause damage.
Caution!
Do not lubricate nuts, bolts or other threaded fittings, unless specifically
indicated in subsequent text.
Caution!
Vehicle driving characteristics, braking behaviour and sensitivity to side
wind are affected. Do not exceed the maximum permitted speed of
130 km/h (80 mph).
Caution!
Only repair or exchange parts at a qualified workshop. Only genuine
replacement parts obtained through an authorised dealer may be used.
Caution!
Degrease ball head of towing hitch before assembly.
Warning!
Check function of lighting after fitting bicycle carrier. Before each journey
check function of lighting and ensure bicycle carrier and bicycles and are
seated correctly. When the rear fog light on the bicycle rack is switched on,
the rear fog light of the vehicle must be switched off, i.e they must not be
illuminated at the same time.
In vehicle models whose type approval was initially issued after
1 October 1998, neither the mounted rear rack system nor its load must
cover the vehicle's third brake light. The vehicle's third brake light must be
visible to the left and right, relative to the vehicle's longitudinal axis, at
a horizontal angle of 10° relative to the top edge of the lamp, at a vertical
angle of 10°, and relative to the lower edge of the lamp, at a vertical angle
of 5°. If these values are not met, a "third" replacement brake light
must be installed.
Warning!
The registration plate on the bicycle carrier and the vehicle registration
plate must display the same registration. The registration plate on
the bicycle holder must be easily readable.
Warning!
The registration plate and the lighting equipment of the bicycle carrier
must not be covered.
Warning!
Remove bicycle carrier before using a car wash.
Warning!
Remember revised width/height of vehicle when entering restricted
areas and entrances etc.
Warning!
If the vehicle is equipped with an electrically operated tailgate/boot lid,
ensure that there is sufficient clearance when the bicycle carrier is
mounted on the towing hitch. If possible, deactivate the electrically
operated tailgate/boot lid and operate it only manually.
Note!
These assembly and operating instructions also contain the bicycle
carrier general type approval for use with towing hitches and must
always be carried in the vehicle.
