Removing The Tracheostomy Tube
19. The inner cannula can be cleaned and reused to maintain a patent airway without
requiring the entire tube to be changed.
WARNINGS:
SPARE INNER CANNULAE (SIC) WITH RED 15 mm CONNECTORS ARE AVAILABLE
SEPARATELY FOR SHORT TERM USE TO MAINTAIN MECHANICAL VENTILATION
WHILE THE ORIGINAL INNER CANNULA IS BEING CLEANED. IT SHOULD NOT BE USED
AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE INNER CANNULA PROVIDED WITH THE PRODUCT.
20. Before removing the tracheostomy tube, the cuff (if present) should be completely
deflated with a syringe. This will ensure that the cuff passes through the stoma
with minimum resistance.
Additional Instructions for Use - Fenestrated Tracheostomy Tubes (FEN, CFN)
WARNINGS:
SPECIAL CARE MUST BE EXERCISED TO MAINTAIN FENESTRATION PATENCY,
PARTICULARLY FOR PATIENTS WITH THICK, TENACIOUS SECRETIONS THAT
MAY BLOCK THE FENESTRATIONS. USE APPROPRIATE HUMIDIFICATION
WHEN INDICATED TO ASSIST IN MAINTAINING LUMEN PATENCY. CARE
SHOULD BE TAKEN IN THE SELECTION AND PLACEMENT OF THE FEN OR CFN
TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE TO MINIMIZE THE COMPLICATIONS THAT MAY ARISE
FROM GRANULATION TISSUE. OBSTRUCTION OF THE FENESTRATIONS MAY
PREVENT INSERTION OF THE NON-FENESTRATED INNER CANNULA WITH
THE WHITE 15 mm CONNECTOR NEEDED FOR MECHANICAL VENTILATION
OR COMPROMISE UPPER AIRWAY ACCESS. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FEN OR CFN
TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER TYPE OF
TUBE.
WHEN USING A FENESTRATED TUBE (FEN or CFN) THE NON-FENESTRATED
INNER CANNULA WITH THE WHITE 15 mm CONNECTOR MUST BE USED
DURING SUCTIONING TO PREVENT THE SUCTION CATHETER FROM
PROTRUDING THROUGH THE FENESTRATIONS OF THE TRACHEOSTOMY TUBE.
SUCTIONING WITHOUT THE NON-FENESTRATED INNER CANNULA IN PLACE
COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE TRACHEAL WALL AND COULD CAUSE THE
SUCTION CATHETER TO BECOME CAUGHT IN THE FENESTRATIONS.
IF YOU FEEL RESISTANCE WHEN INSERTING THE INNER CANNULA PAST
THE FENESTRATION, DO NOT FORCE THE INNER CANNULA THROUGH THE
CANNULA. NOTIFY YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER IMMEDIATELY.
NEVER USE THE FENESTRATED TRACHEOSTOMY TUBES FOR MECHANICAL
VENTILATION UNLESS THE NON FENESTRATED INNER CANNULA WITH WHITE
15 mm CONNECTOR IS IN PLACE TO PREVENT LEAKAGE THROUGH THE
FENESTRATIONS.
