WELDING HELMETS WITH AUTOMATIC DARKENING FILTER AND ELECTRO-VENTILATED
RESPIRATOR
NB: In the text that follows, the term "helmet", "filter" and "respirator" will be used.
1. GENERAL SAFETY FOR HELMET USE AND PROFESSIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL USE
The operator must be sufficiently trained on safe use of the welding machine and
informed on the risks relating to arc welding procedures, the relevant safety measures
and the emergency procedures.
Read the safety provisions carefully of the welding machine you intend to use with
this helmet.
• In narrow spaces or in particular circumstances outdoors, a certified respirator may
be necessary.
• Ensure adequate air exchange or use of devices suitable to remove the welding
fumes near the arc; a systematic approach is necessary to assess the welding
fume exposure limits based on their composition, concentration and duration of
exposure.
Do not use the helmet with the respirator in locations lacking oxygen: it is not suitable
for use in atmospheres with a percentage of oxygen under 19.5%.
The protection gas used in arc welding can eliminate air with serious, or even fatal,
consequences.
Always use adequate ventilation, especially in narrow environments to guarantee the
inhaled air is safe.
Do not use the helmet with the respirator if windy: it could generate negative pressure
inside the helmet with the resulting absorption of external air contaminants.
• Do not use the respirator without a spark shield, pre-filter and HEPA particulate
filter installed. Certification of this respirator is with a spark shield, pre-filter and
HEPA particulate filter installed; use of the respirator with these components not
installed in compliance with certification can be dangerous for health.
• Do NOT enter the designated work area until you are sure the respirator equipment
is correctly assembled, working and worn correctly.
• Replace the air filter, if damaged or obstructed. Do NOT clean with compressed air or
use dirty air filters again.
• Use the specific replacement air filter specified in this manual. Use of other filters
will invalidate certification of the respirator system.
During welding, luminous radiation emitted by the electric arc
can damage eyes and burn skin; furthermore, welding produces
sparks and drops of molten metal can be projected in all
directions. It is therefore necessary to use the safety helmet to
avoid physical injury, which may even be serious.
• Avoid the welding helmet catching fire, for any reason, as the fumes produced are
harmful to eyes and, if inhaled, for the body.
• The material composing the complete helmet is free of hazardous substances and
does not present any risk for man or the environment.
• Regularly check the condition of the helmet and the filter:
- Before each use, check correct positioning and fastening of the filter and the
protective plates which must be exactly in the space described.
- Keep the helmet far from flames.
- The helmet must not be too close to the welding area.
- In prolonged welding, every now and then check the helmet for any deformations
or wear.
- For particularly sensitive people, the materials that come in contact with the skin
could cause allergic reactions.
• This automatic darkening helmet is only certified to protect the face and eyes from
harmful ultraviolet and infra-red radiation, from sparks and welding sprays; it is not
suitable for laser welding and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting or to protect the
face from explosions or corrosive liquids.
• Only replace parts of the helmet, the filter and the respirator with others specified in
this manual. Non-compliance with this regulation can expose the operator to health
risks.
• If the helmet does not darken or presents functionality problems, refer to the
TROUBLESHOOTING chapter; if the problem persists, immediately stop using the
helmet and contact your supervisor or distributor.
• Do not immerse the filter in water or other liquids; do not use solvents to clean the
filter or the protective plates.
• Use the helmet only at temperatures: -5°C (+23°F) ÷ +55°C (+131°F).
• Store the helmet only at temperatures: -20°C (-4°F) ÷ +65°C (+149°F).
• Protect the filter and the protective plates from contact with liquids and dirt.
• Do not open the filter container.
• Never use the helmet without the internal or external transparent protective plates
of the filter.
• Check compatibility of the protective plates of the filter and the helmet: both should
be marked with the same impact resistance symbol against high speed particles, in
this case F. If the marking symbols are not common to both, the protective plates
of the filter and the helmet, then the lowest protection level of the helmet-filter
assembly should be used.
• The eye protection against high speed particles worn over standard glasses can
produce impact, thereby creating hazards for those who wear them.
• Do not use spare parts other than original TELWIN parts.
Unauthorised modifications and replacement with non-original parts will void the
warranty and expose the operator to the risk of personal injury.
• Remember to use the helmet, the automatic darkening filter and the relevant
protective plates for a maximum of 2 years. The duration of these items depends

on various factors such as the frequency of their use, cleaning, storage and
maintenance. You are advised to frequently inspect and replace if damaged.
PRECAUTIONS AND MISUSE
To protect the user's safety and ensure the welding automatic darkening filter works
properly, read these instructions carefully and consult a qualified instructor or
supervisor before starting work.
• These filters and protection plates can be used in all welding processes, with the
exception of oxy-acetylene welding and laser welding.
• The light protection plate in standard polycarbonate must be applied on both sides
of the filters.
• Non-use of the protection plates can be hazardous for safety or cause irreparable
damage to the automatic darkening filter.
• Use is planned of the helmet in the "GRIND" position (where present) exclusively for
grinding.
The respirator is connected to the welding helmet using a flexible tube that could get
stuck in objects: keep the work area unobstructed.
The respirator is not suitable or certified for use in areas characterised by dangerous
levels of gas:
its efficiency is limited to filtration of contaminant particles of particulate where they
do not pose an immediate danger for life or health.
Do not use the helmet with the respirator in locations lacking oxygen: it is not suitable
for use in atmospheres with a percentage of oxygen under 19.5%.
Do not use the helmet with the electro-ventilated respirator in the off position:
inside the helmet, a rapid accumulation of carbon dioxide could build up, resulting in
reduced oxygen available to the operator.
Use is not permitted of the device described here in environments with an explosive
atmosphere.
2. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The personal protective equipment described here is formed by a welding helmet with
automatic darkening filter and a powered, air-purifying respirator (PAPR).
The "SUPER" model helmet is composed of a GX-850RM filter; furthermore, it is composed of
transparent external and internal front guards and a fabric collar.
The helmet was designed to guarantee correct eye protection during welding, as well as
providing the maximum performance both in facilitated assembly and the convenience and
quality of use: it guarantees permanent protection against UV and IR radiation and sparks
generated during the arc welding process.
The respirator is battery powered and is suitable for the use planned for powered respirators
with filter, certified as class TH2P pursuant to EN 12941: 1998 + Amds.
