Product description
4.1.1 Pump
The waste water series FEX, FET, FWX, FMX and FSX consist of a robust pump and motor
housing made from grey cast iron. The motor is cooled by the surrounding medium. The
pumps are equipped with two floating ring seals – one on the motor side and the other on the
hydraulic side. In between is an oil barrier chamber.
The noise level of the pumps is less than 70 db (according to ISO 3746).
4.1.2 Thermal motor protection switch
Thermal motor protection switches are bimetal switches integrated in the motor coil. When
the motor temperature rises above 130 °C (normal motor), the contacts open and interrupt
the electric circuit to the coil of the pump protection switches, causing the pump to stop. The
coil is re-energized as soon as the thermal motor protection switches have cooled to below
a temperature of 110 °C. The maximum connection power at the thermal motor protection
switches is 250 V/1.6 A.
4.1.3 Seal sensor (OSK)
A seal sensor is integrated in the oil barrier chamber (with the exception of FMX and FSX) and
catches all infiltrations of water through the lower floating ring seal.
The control unit alerts the operator of the plant when the ohmic resistance of the emulsion has
fallen below 30 kΩ. This is an indication that the medium-side floating ring seal is worn and
needs to be replaced before water can penetrate into the motor.
4.1.4 Operating mode
The motors are designed for permanent submerged operation S1, maximum 15 switch cycles
per hour. It is recommended to configure the plant to duty type S3. Duty type S3 is made up
of intervals of 10 minute duration. This means that the specified percentage (see "Technical
Data") divided by 10 results in the permitted runtime in minutes per interval. Example: S3
= 25% = 2.5 minutes operation and 7.5 minutes standstill, according to IEC 34-1/CEI 2.3.
The maximum start-up frequency per hour for a flooded motor is provided in the "Technical
Data".
4.1.5 Explosion hazard areas
Any operating modes that exceed the performance limits listed on the name-
plate under "Technical Data" are not permitted.
For applications in explosive environments, ATEX pumps in a protected and
tested version are available.
More detailed information is available from Biral AG. Pumps in the standard
series FEX, FET, FWX, FMX and FSX are not permitted for ATEX.
The explosion protection class of the pumps must be approved by the appli-
cable authorities for the assembly location in each individual case.
