7.12.2 The thigh pads should contact the distal edge of the hip pads and should rest
under the patient's thighs (see Figure 36). Once the pads have been adjusted
to the proper location, the surgeon should gently lift the patient at the location of
contact for each pad and smooth the contact surface of the pad.
7.12.3 Confirm that all support pad locks are latched and secure.

7.13 Positioning Of The Legs

7.13.1 Position the legs on the leg support sections or the leg sling as desired. When
using the sling, place two (2) or three (3) pillows below the patient's knees and
tibias to aid in minimizing the pressure on the knees and tibias. Confirm that
the patient's feet are free from contact of any table surface.
NOTE: It may be advantageous to use the leg sling to accommodate a tall patient on
the spinal top by allowing increased hip and knee flexion.
7.13.2 Place a blanket over the feet up to the gluteal area to assist in decreasing the
potential of hypothermia. Extra pillows may be positioned under the feet and
lower legs to prevent the feet from contacting the top or base and to increase
the knee flexion angle.
NOTE:
Due to the open nature of the Jackson Spinal Surgery Top and the long
duration of the spinal surgical procedure, the use of forced air warmers, fluid warmers
and blankets should be considered and are recommended to help prevent hypothermia.
Blankets may be placed over the feet up to the gluteal area and across the shoulders
and arms out of the surgical field to aid in maintaining the patient's body temperature.
These devices should be used according to the manufacturer's directions and at the
direction of the attending physician.
7.13.3 Apply the buttock strap across the lower gluteal area. This strap should be
positioned cephalad of the hip pads around the table frame and back into the
corresponding buckle.
gluteal area, surrounds both hip pads, and is secured snugly around the
buttocks. The blanket may be used under the buttock strap to protect the
patient from direct contact with the safety strap.
7.13.4 Apply a safety strap (60") across the patient's calves and around the frame and
secure with the buckle. The strap should be tight enough to secure the legs
against the pillows if the Table is laterally tilted. Apply a safety strap (90")
around the patient's torso, chest pad and table and secure with the buckle (see
Figure 43).
7.13.5 Prep and drape the patient in the standard fashion. Avoid the prepping solution
from flowing and pooling below the patient's abdomen and onto the
components of the table.
7.13.6 If desired, the surgeon can adjust table height, trendelenburg and reverse
trendelenburg with the patient in place by using the hand pendant. (The lateral
tilt can be adjusted using the hand pendant on the 5892/5803 Advanced
Control Base only.) Refer to the appropriate Modular Table Base owner's
manual for complete instructions for using these functions.
