Important water recycling
terms
Wastewater
Wastewater is effluent water changed in its
characteristics by domestic, industrial,
agricultural or other use. Wastewater also
includes precipitation that runs off paved
surfaces and is collected.
Grey water
Grey water is a part of the household
wastewater, which is free from faecal matter
and heavily contaminated kitchen wastewater.
It applies primarily to the outflow from bath
tubs, shower trays and washbasins. In terms of
statistics, approx. 55 litres of grey water are
obtained per person and day in a water-saving
household. This volume may vary to a great
extent depending on personal habits.
Compared to the water drainage from a roof,
grey water is obtained irrespective of the
weather and in almost the same volume every
day. Grey water is treated in the water recycling
system for use as process water/clear water.
Black water
Black water is the part of household
wastewater which is heavily contaminated by
faecal matter, food waste etc. by way of toilets
and kitchen sinks.

Process water/clear water
Process water is all the grey water which can
be reused after treatment. It is clear,
hygienically innocuous water produced with the
water recycling system. It can be used in
private households and in industry to operate
facilities consuming water which does not
necessarily have to be of drinking water quality.
Possibilities for use are:
Toilet flushing
•
Washing machine
•
Cleaning purposes
•
Garden irrigation.
•
Drinking water
According to DIN EN 1717 drinking water is
water suited for human consumption and other
uses. The quality of drinking water is defined in
the German Drinking Water Ordinance.
According to EU Directive 98/83, drinking water
is water for human use.
