6 | Examples of use

The following examples illustrate the various ways in which the
digital multimeter can be used on your motorcycle. When you
perform these procedures yourself, always follow the safety
instructions for using the meter. Model-specific details and target
measurement values can be found in a repair and maintenance
manual for your particular motorcycle. While we have carefully
researched all the instructions and reviewed them several times,
we hope you will understand that we cannot accept any liability for
possible errors.

6.1 | Testing the charging circuit

The charging circuit ensures that there is a power supply to the
battery and all electrical devices (ignition, lights, etc.) on your
motorbike.
• If there are indications that the alternator is not charging the
battery sufficiently (e.g. headlight becomes dimmer or battery
charging indicator light flickers), start with a visual inspection
of all the accessible components of the charging circuit. Plug
connections should be secure and clean, cables must not show
any sign of damage, wear or scorch marks, the alternator and
regulator/rectifier should not exhibit any obvious mechanical
defects.
• To test the individual components further, the battery should be in
good condition and fully charged. If you identify a fault in one part
of the charging circuit, all the other components of the circuit must
also be checked for damage.

6.1.1 | Charging voltage

Measuring the charging voltage reveals whether or not the
charging circuit is working correctly. First warm up the engine.
Then jack up the bike and make the battery terminals accessible.
Allow the engine to idle. Insert the red test lead in the VΩmAhFE
jack, and the black test lead in the COM jack on the multimeter.
Preselect the 20 V DC measuring range. Hold the red test probe
