The SP Format
Special SP (superior performance) format
In the SP format, the Y-FM carrier frequency is shifted up 1.2 MHz which allows a
wider bandwidth for the Y-FM signal recording.
'The BVU-950 employs the SP format to achieve a higher quality picture for recording
and playback. The SP format cassette tape is available to make the best use of the
SP format. Just load an SP cassette into the BVU-950 and the recording is made
automatically in the SP format.
Compatible with the conventional recording format
The BVU-950 can use either the SP cassette or the conventional U-matic cassette for
recording and playback.
The BVU-950 automatically detects the type of the cassette loaded and adjusts itself
for recording or playback in the appropriate format. Moreover, if you load an SP
cassette that was recorded with the conventional recording format, the BVU-950 first
detects the difference in format of the recorded signal and then plays it back in the
appropriate format. The SP lamp on the control panel lights for recording and
playback in the SP format.

e Do not edit an SP format recorded cassette tape with a conventional BVU series
VTR which does not have SP format capability. Otherwise, the difference in the Y-
FM carrier frequencies will possibly cause a momentary break up in the picture at
the edited points.
*x Although the SP cassettes give the best result for
recording and playback with the SP format, they can
also be used with the conventional BVU series VTRs for
recording.
In this case, recording will, of course,
be
made in the conventional recording format.
