CONCAVE
(Fig. 20)
If the grass clippings do not enter the grassbox
satisfactorily the concave needs adjusting:
1.
Ensure that the concave (A) aligns correctly
with the bottom edge of the bottom block.
2.
Release the two nuts (B) which secure the
concave to the side plates.
3.
Move the concave until there is approximately
1.5mm (1/16in) between the concave and the
cutting cylinder, measured as near to the centre
point of the cylinder as possible.
4.
Retighten the nuts (B).
As the cutting cylinder gradually wears it may
eventually be necessary to slightly flatten the concave
to maintain the 1.5mm (1/16in) gap between the
concave and the cylinder and keep the grass delivery
high into the box in wet conditions.
NOTE: The concave must not touch the cutting
cylinder.
BACK LAPPING THE CUTTING CYLINDER
(Fig. 21 & 22)
The keen cutting edges of the spiral cutters can be
maintained by a process of 'back lapping'.
1.
Raise the mower on the kickstand (A Fig.21))
and disengage the cylinder clutch.
2.
Check the cutting cylinder is set correctly to the
bottom blade (see previous note).
3.
Remove the plastic cover (B Fig.21)from the
end of the right hand cylinder bearing housing.
4.
Smear some carborundum paste* on the spiral
cutters.
*
Obtainable from most automobile service
stations.
5.
Rotate the cutting cylinder clockwise by using a
socket spanner and brace on the hexagon
(A Fig.22) at the R.H. end of the cylinder
spindle.
NOTE: During the 'back lapping' operation
regular checks should be made on the setting of
the cutting cylinder to the bottom blade and if
necessary any slight adjustments made.
When the cutters have been sharpened satisfactorily
they will cut the paper cleanly along the length of the
bottom blade.
WIPE OFF ALL TRACES OF THE CARBORUNDUM
PASTE.
