RAIL ASSIST CABLE REPLACEMENT

WARNING
Use only Stryker p/n: 19-0381 to replace the rail assist cable. Using a different cable may cause severe injury to the
patient or user and damage to the stretcher.
TOOLS REQUIRED:
• #1 Phillips Screwdriver
• #2 Phillips Screwdriver
• Small Regular Screwdriver
• Knife
• (2) Vise Grips
PROCEDURE:
1.
Apply the brakes. Raise the rail to be repaired to the
highest position.
2.
According to the rail needing repair, lift the foot section
and fold it back toward the head end of the stretcher
or remove the head section to access the rail assist
mechanism. See the "Head Section Replacement"
procedure,
page
1-47, for reference.
3.
Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws
holding the protective plates to the litter frame (see Figure 14,
4.
Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver, remove the eight screws (A) holding the bottom of the lower plastic cover (B) on
to the top half of the cover (C). If working on a moving access door siderail, open the access door to reach the
screws on each end of the top half of the cover (see Figure 24,
5.
Insert a small regular screwdriver between the two halves of the lower plastic cover to separate them. Use caution
to avoid scratching the covers or damaging the upper cover snap pins. Remove the lower cover.
6.
Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws (O) holding the brake shoe cover (P) to the brake shoe
support (S) and remove the cover (see Figure 24,
7.
Cut the cable and slowly release the tension on the spring. Remove the defective cable. Note the cable path begins
underneath the lower structural member. See assembly drawings "Siderail Assist System",
Assist System",
page
1-93, for reference of the complete cable path.
8.
Make two solid knots at one end of the new cable and pass the other end through the hole in the lower structural
member. Lower the rail slightly to route the cable through the first pulley.
9.
Raise the rail to the highest position. Route the cable though the remaining pulleys and into the fixed pulley
support. Use vise grips to hold the cable in place.
10. Grasp the vise grips firmly and lower and raise the rail several times to stretch the cable. When the cable no longer
stretches, raise the rail to the highest position.
11. Lower the rail to the 14 in. position. Mark the cable where it enters the fixed cable support. Make a knot in this
location.
12. Raise the rail to the highest position and lower it to the 14 in. position several times using the release handle to
ensure the rail latches in the 14 in. position smoothly. Adjust the knot if necessary, otherwise tighten the knot, and
make a second knot next to the first. Cut the excess cable.
13. Verify proper operation of the rail before reinstalling the remaining components and returning the stretcher to
service.
