Radio control system

Jet models are usually equipped with many additional electronic systems in addition to the actual receiving
system, e.g. the ECU, gyro systems, undercarriage control systems etc. For this reason we strongly
recommend the use of a PCM receiver, as the digital transmission technology which they exploit completely
suppresses brief interference signals. Every interference signal which strikes a conventional FM receiver, no
matter how brief, immediately and inevitably generates a random control surface movement.
The failsafe circuit of the radio control system should be set to throttle back the turbine to idle if interference
should occur. In practice it has proved less useful to shut down the turbine completely, since:
1.
If a brief, insignificant burst of interference should occur, the system would shut down the
turbine immediately, and the resultant emergency landing would usually cause serious damage,
especially if the model is a scale type.
2.
In any case, the sudden drop in the speed of the turbine provides a clear warning to the pilot
that brief interference has occurred.
Receiver aerial:
The receiver aerial should be run outside the fuselage by the shortest possible route, and ideally connected
to a whip aerial; an efficient aerial of this type is particularly important for any jet model. We specifically
advise against deploying the aerial inside the fuselage.
Servos:
For the main control surfaces you should always use powerful servos with a rated output torque of 7 kg or
more. Wherever possible the linkage should make use of the full mechanical travel of the servos.
Receiver battery:
To maximise servo power 5-cell batteries should be used wherever possible. The installation of a double
power supply (2 batteries / 2 switches) is recommended.
Additional installation notes:
The turbine ECU should not be located immediately adjacent to the receiver (distance > 10 cm).
The leads from the ECU (battery, pump, data bus, turbine lead) should be kept well away from the receiving
system leads (e.g. servo leads).
