the subjective hygiene feeling of the patient greatly determine how often
cleaning is performed. As a rule of thumb we recommend cleaning the
tracheostomy cannula at least twice a week, disinfecting it if necessary.
Carefully dry the individual components after preparing the tube set.
C) Storage until reuse
Long-term tracheotomized patients often have several complete
tracheostomy sets available for personal use. Thus the cleaned and
dried tube sets must be stored in dry, closed containers which are
protected from light and ozone. The containers should prevent soiling
and contamination of the tubes and thus should be stored in a cool
and dry place.
Caution (cuff related!)
The cuff must not be inflated during storage.
D) Safety testing before reuse
The function of the tube set must be tested before every renewed use
in order to ensure that the tube set has not been damaged due to being
reused too many times or being prepared incorrectly for reuse.
The following must be tested in particular:
• Kinking
• Working connection system at the tube
• Intact edges at the tip of the tube (no sharp edges or chipped material
• Intact cuff and filling system (see preparation of cannula set)
• Intact fixation flange and tube shaft
• The inner lumen must be patent (no encrustation stuck to the walls)
Warning
On no account should you continue to use set components
if you observe the following:
• Damage, especially to the outer or inner surface of the shaft and cuff
system (e.g. surface cracks, leaking cuff, parts of the armouring
penetrating the tube wall, etc.).
• Brittleness or hardening of cuff or other set components.
• Separation of the standard connector from shaft.
• Damage of the fixation screw and the neck plate.
Safe use can no longer be expected under these circumstances!
