Deflating the air (Cuff related!)
Firstly, the tracheal section above the cuff should be cleaned by draining
accumulated secretion and mucus. If this is not possible in a conscious
patient with maintained reflexes, it is recommended to advance a suction
catheter into the trachea through the tracheostomy tube and, while
suctioning, to completely remove the air out of the cuff using a syringe.
Thus escaping secretion can be effortlessly suctioned up and does not
cause coughing. When the air has been completely removed from the
cuff, the cannula can be safely removed through the stoma.
B) Cleaning and disinfecting the tube set
If the tube is heavily soiled with encrusted secretion, blood or other body
fluids which cannot be removed completely when the cannula is in place,
the tracheostomy tube should be removed and cleaned outside the
body. Simple cleaning (see below) should always be carried out,
followed by disinfection if required. These tube sets must not be
resterilized.
1.
Simple cleaning
The lumen of the removed tube may be cleaned with a soft brush and
neutral soap solution and then rinsed out with clear, hand-hot water.
Caution:
Temperatures should not exceed 50 °C!
2.
Disinfection and cleaning
When using disinfectants (e.g. disinfectants based on active oxygen)
ensure that their exposure times and concentrations are exactly observed.
The disinfectant solution must be freshly prepared before each new
application.
Thorough rinsing is indispensable to remove any possible residues!
Important!
We recommend the usage of disinfectants based on active oxygen (e.g.
Sekusept classic, Sekusept aktiv). Cleaning with these agents has been
tested and approved by us. This way you make sure that the tube set is
not damaged through the use of disinfectants. Unsuitable disinfectants
(especially those containing alcohol) can damage the tube and lead to
dangerous malfunction.
Basically all disinfectants can penetrate the tube material and lead to
irritation of the mucous membrane later when used again.
Thorough rinsing to remove the residues is therefore essential!
Warning
• When using cannulas with cuff: The use of brushes in the cuff region
should be avoided to prevent injury to the cuff.
• Cleaning in an alcoholic bath and in solvents must be avoided at all
costs due to the danger of material hardening and shrinking.
• The prescribed exposure times and concentrations of disinfecting
solutions must not be exceeded (please observe manufacturer's
instructions).
• Only use freshly prepared disinfecting solutions!

Resterilisation
Resterilisation is not allowed!
4.
Frequency of cleaning
The cannula and its components should be cleaned as required.
