When completed, the model will stand with the wheel legs firmly against the buffers; the
purpose of the springs is just to move the wheels down to the correct position for retraction.

1.3.3. Installing the main undercarriage

The first step is to cut out the openings in the underside of the sponsons (stub wings) along the
marked lines. The openings are marked shorter than necessary, so that you can extend them to
the exact size required using the installed undercarriage legs as a guide. For this reason the
retract units should first be installed with the wheels removed. Drill 5 mm Ø holes in the
undercarriage formers A15, A16, A17 and A18 exactly at the punched points to accept the
undercarriage pivot bushes F27, and then trim them to fit in the appropriate positions in the stub
wings. Glue small pieces of scrap wood to the formers A17 and A18 in the region of the 10 mm
Ø holes to provide extra stiffening, and continue the 10 mm Ø holes through them when the
glue has set hard. Glue the pivot bushes F25 and F27 in place. When you have glued the pivot
bushes F27 in the formers A15 and A16, glue small pieces of scrap wood on the outside, to
prevent any chance of the undercarriage leg shafts slipping out later.
Press the two dowel pins F3 into two of the levers F24, then push the levers onto the ends of
the two aluminium tubes F31. The tubes should end flush with the flat face of the levers F24 -
they must not project. These assemblies can now be slid into the formers A17 and A18 from the
undercarriage well side. Fit a collet F26 on each of the shafts F24 from the back to prevent them
slipping out. Position the collets to leave about 1 mm axial play in the shafts. Drill a 2.5 mm Ø
hole in the shaft F24 and tube F31, working through the threaded holes in the collet F26. Apply
a drop of thread-lock fluid to the grubscrews and tighten them fully; they must pass right into the
aluminium tube F31 to prevent any chance of the parts rotating.
