Bell 230
install the silencer console (4450.149) to support it; this is available as an optional extra. This
console supports the silencer in a defined position relative to the mechanics, which makes it
easier to remove and re-install the main mechanical aggregate for maintenance. The exact
installation of the exhaust console is left to the builder's discretion. Ideally the silencer's tail pipe
should be extended by a length of silicone exhaust hose, exiting the fuselage through the
smallest possible hole. It is possible to bend the rear part of the tail pipe carefully if necessary,
although it is better to use a curved silicone exhaust hose, Order No. 1383.10, or an angled
stainless steel tail pipe, Order No. 2254.
1.11 Completing the top fuselage fairing and tail cap
The top fuselage fairing (B2) has already been trimmed to fit, and can now be fixed to the main
fuselage using six 2.2 x 6.5 mm self-tapping screws.
For maintenance work you will need to remove the top fairing. The rotor head must first be
removed, and the top fuselage fairing can then be lifted off.
Cut out the tail cap along the marked line which runs all round the moulding. Cut out an opening
on the left-hand side to clear the tail rotor gearbox and its actuating lever. Fix the cap to the
recessed flange of the tail boom using three 2.2 x 6.5 mm self-tapping screws.
1.12 Applying the colour finish
Using the decal sheet available as an accessory is a useful start in achieving an attractive scale
finish on your helicopter. Apply the decals using the kit box illustration as a guide. The complex
double-curvature shape of the fuselage makes it impractical to use large-area decals, so there
is really no alternative to a painted finish. We recommend using paints from our Universal or
Acrylfix range. Rub down the surfaces to be painted using 600-grit to 1200-grit wet-and-dry
paper, used wet, to ensure that the paint adheres well.
1.13 Attaching the windows
The individual glazing panels are supplied in the kit pre-cut. Nevertheless, please check each
one carefully and trim the edges as necessary. The front screens are fixed permanently to the
removable front section of the fuselage, and are attached to the fixed part of the fuselage using
2.2 x 6.5 mm self-tapping screws. We also recommend that you leave the large side windows in
both rear side doors removable to provide easy access to the needle valve, receiving system
switch and other components of the mechanics. The fixed windows can be attached to the
fuselage using UHU plus endfest 300 or cyano. Caution: be sparing with the adhesive as any
excess squeezed out will spoil the appearance of the glazing.
Each of the removable side windows can be fixed to the window frames using four 2.2 x 6.5 mm
self-tapping screws, fitted as shown in the drawing.
After drilling the screw-holes in the glazing panels open up the holes outwards to form open-
ended slots. Don't tighten the screws fully; instead tighten them just to the point where the
panels can be slipped under the screw heads by gently bending them inwards. They can be
removed in the same way. Fit internal doublers (made from scrap wood) for the removable
window screws as already described.
