Accident prevention
The prevailing accident prevention regulations must be observed, even though the break
ing force values in the destructive range are well in excess of the full scale value.
Additional safety precautions
The force transducers (as passive transducers or as sensors with permanently con
nected electronics) cannot perform any (safety) shutdowns. This requires additional
components and design measures, for which the installer and operator of the system are
responsible.
In cases where a breakage or malfunction of the force transducer would cause injury to
persons or damage to equipment, the user must take appropriate additional safety pre
cautions that at least meet the requirements of applicable accident prevention regula
tions (e.g. automatic emergency shutdown, overload protection, catch straps or chains, or
other fall protection).
The electronics that process the measurement signal must be designed so that failure of
the measurement signal cannot lead to secondary failures.
General dangers of failing to follow the safety instructions
Force transducers are state-of-the-art and failsafe. The transducers can be dangerous if
they are mounted, set up, used, or operated incorrectly, or by untrained personnel.
Every person involved in setting up, commissioning, operating, or repairing a force trans
ducer must have read and understood the mounting instructions, in particular the techni
cal safety instructions. The force transducers can be damaged or destroyed by use for
other than their intended purpose or by failure to observe the mounting instructions,
these safety instructions or other applicable safety regulations (safety and accident pre
vention regulations of the Employers' Liability Insurance Association) when using the
force transducers. Force transducers can break, particularly if overloaded. The breakage
of a force transducer can also cause damage to property or injury to persons in the vicin
ity of the force transducer.
The force transducers may also fail or malfunction, resulting in injury to persons or dam
age to property caused by loads acting on or being monitored by the force transducers if
force transducers are not used for their intended purpose or if the safety instructions or
specifications in the mounting instructions are not observed.
The scope of supply and performance of the transducer covers only a small area of force
measurement technology, as measurements with (resistive) strain gage sensors require
the use of electronic signal conditioning. This also applies to the variants with a perma
nently connected amplifier module. Plant planners, fitters, and operators must also plan,
implement, and take responsibility for issues relating to the safety of the force measure
ment systems ensuring that residual risks are minimized. Pertinent national and local
regulations must be complied with.
