Cleaning and disinfecting
The fire helmet is subjected to far greater stress when
cleaned in a machine than when cleaned by hand. When
treated in a drum washing machine, the overall mechanical
stress is higher than when using the spraying method.
Machine cleaning can have a negative impact on the life span
of the fire helmet.
Coated visors, particularly visors with a permanent anti-fog
coating, are subject to particular stress when cleaned by
machines due to the longer soaking times of the agent, which
can lead to the coating dissolving or becoming permanently
damaged. Coated visors must be thoroughly air dried or dried
in the drying cabinet. Coated visors should be aired in a
standard atmosphere for one day in accordance with DIN EN
ISO 291 in order to allow for the coating to regenerate and the
visor to achieve an ideal service life. The helmet and textile
components, in particular, must be dried thoroughly in order to
prevent the formation of mold.
The helmet may become damaged if consideration is not
given to the following information.
6.2.1 Cleaning the fire helmet in a drum washing
machine
6.2.1.1 Reprocessing method
1. Remove any electronic accessories (e.g., helmet lamp,
HPS BuddyLight rear light) from the fire helmet and clean
separately.
2. Fold up the face-guard.
3. Load the washing machine so that only one other helmet
would fit in the machine.
4. Pack the fire helmet in a washing bag.
5. Start the washing cycle.
6. Rinse thoroughly at least six times.
7. Leave all parts to thoroughly air dry or place them in the
drying cabinet (temperature: max. 60 °C (140 °F)). Protect
against direct sunlight.
