SPARK PLUG
Carefully read page 51 (MAINTENANCE)
Check the spark plug after the first 625 mi
(1000 km) and change it every 3750 mi
(6000 km). At regular intervals, remove the
spark plug and clean off any carbon
deposits or replace as required.
To reach the spark plug:
Remove the central inspection cover,

To remove and clean the spark plug:
Before carrying out the following
procedures, let the engine and the

temperature to avoid burns.
Pull the cap (1) off the spark plug (2).
u
Remove all the dirt from the base of the
u
spark plug, then unscrew it with the
wrench you will find in the tool kit and
extract it from its seat, taking care that
neither dust nor other substances enter
the cylinder.
Make sure that there are no carbon
u
deposits or corrosion marks on the
electrode or on the central part; if
necessary, clean them with the special
cleaners for spark plugs, with an iron
wire and/or a metal brush.
Blow hard to prevent the removed
u
residues from getting into the engine.
Change the spark plug if it shows cracks
on the insulating material, corroded
electrodes or excessive deposits.
Check the electrode gap with a feeler

gauge.
The gap must be 0.7 – 0.8 mm;
if necessary, adjust it, carefully bending
the earth electrode.
Make sure that the washer is in good
u
condition. Fit the washer and screw the
spark plug finger-tight to avoid damaging
the thread.
Tighten using the wrench supplied with
u
the tool kit. Screw in each spark plug by
one half turn to compress the washer.

occur.
Use recommended spark plugs only,
see page 74 (TECHNICAL DATA). A
spark plug of the wrong rating may
shorten engine life and cause loss of
performance.
Position the spark plug cap properly to
u
prevent it from coming off due to engine
vibration.
Refit the central inspection cover, see
u
page 60 (REMOVING THE CENTRAL
INSPECTION COVER).
