FA 'A' winches are air powered, planetary geared units designed for lifting and pulling applications. FA 'A' winches can be supplied with
either an internal disc brake, an external mounted manual or automatic band type brake or both.
The output from the externally mounted piston motor is transmitted through a coupling and shaft to the planetary reduction gear assembly.
The output from the planetary reduction gear assembly is connected to the wire rope drum through the output shaft. The internal disc brake, if
equipped, is automatically applied if there is a lack of air pressure. The disc brake is spring applied and released by air pressure when the
winch is operated in the payout direction. The brake remains engaged when the winch is operated in the haul in direction; drum rotation is
allowed by way of the cam type sprag clutch. In the event of a loss of air pressure the brake automatically applies.
Prior to installing the winch, carefully inspect it for possible shipping damage.
FA 'A' winches are supplied fully lubricated from the factory. Check oil levels and adjust as necessary before operating winch. Refer to
"LUBRICATION" section for recommended oils.
• Owners and users are advised to examine specific, local or other regulations which may apply to a particular type of use of this
product before installing or putting winch to use.
Mounting
(Refer to Dwg. MHP0124 and Table 1)
FA2.5A and FA5A Winches
Mount the winch so the axis of the drum is horizontal and that the motor vent cap is not more than 15° off top vertical center. If the winch is
to be mounted in an inverted position the motor case must be rotated to position the vent cap at the top. Contact your distributor or the nearest
service repair center for additional installation information.
All FA 'A' Winches
If the winch is to be mounted in an inverted position the disc brake must be rotated to position the breather at the top.
• Winch frame material is not suitable for welding. FA 'A' winches must only be mounted
by bolting to a suitable foundation. Do not attempt to mount the winch by welding to a
foundation structure.
1.
The winch mounting surface must be flat and of sufficient strength to handle the rated load
plus the weight of the winch and attached equipment. An inadequate foundation may cause
distortion or twisting of the winch uprights and side rails resulting in winch damage.
2.
Make sure the mounting surface is flat to within 0.8 mm (1/32 inch). Shim if necessary.
3.
Mounting bolts must be M18 mm Grade 10.9 or better. Use self-locking nuts or nuts with
lockwashers.
4.
Tighten M18 mm Grade 10.9 mounting bolts evenly and torque to 488 Nm (360 ft lbs) for
dry thread fasteners. If the fasteners are plated, lubricated or a thread locking compound is
used, torque to 366 Nm (270 ft lbs).
5.
Do not weld to any part of the winch.
