Enabling Wired Ethernet - Direct Connect
(Crossover Ethernet Cable)
The following procedure describes how to configure
your VCI for wired Ethernet communication to your PC
using a direct connect-crossover Ethernet cable. Before
modifying the VCI communications interface, contact
your IT Administrator.
A crossover Ethernet cable is required for wired Ether-
net direct connection to the VCI. A crossover cable is
not provided in the ES6520 VCI kit, but can be pur-
chased at your local computer store.
The illustration above shows a laptop computer con-
nected to a VCI using a crossover Ethernet cable. In this
configuration the computer can communicate directly
with the VCI. Since most computers have only a single
network interface, only direct communication with the
VCI (and not the workshop network) is supported in
this configuration.
1. Start the VCI Manager software by clicking the VCI
Manager icon on your desktop.
2. Plug the USB cable into the PC and VCI.
3. Power on the VCI by plugging in the AC/DC 12-volt
power adapter.
4. Select and Connect to your VCI in the VCI Manager
software VCI Explorer tab.
5. Select the Network Setup tab.

6. Select the Wired Ethernet tab.
7. Select the Enable Wired Ethernet Interface check
box in the Interface Control box to enable the inter-
face. Once you enable the interface, the IP Address
Configuration box and the Apply and Cancel buttons
become active.
i
The VCI Manager software stores the changes you
have made for each interface. You can select the
other interface, make additional changes, and then
apply all the changes to both interfaces at once by
selecting the Apply button. You can start over any
time before you select Apply by selecting Cancel so
that all your stored changes are discarded.
8. Select Use the Following Address, then enter an
appropriate IP Address and Subnet mask. You can
enter any static IP address and subnet mask that is
identical to your PC's IP address except for the final
IP address group. For example, if your PC's IP ad-
dress is 10.190.171.4, the VCI must be set up with
an IP address of 10.190.171.x where "x" can any
number other than 4. The subnet mask must be the
same for both the PC and the VCI.
Select Apply to reconfigure your VCI.
9.
A screen displays the changes to be configured.
10. Select Yes to continue, or No to get back to the
Network Setup tab to make any changes.
11. Choose the Properties tab to verify that the VCI is
configured correctly. You can also disconnect the
USB cable to verify that the wired Ethernet connec-
tion is working correctly.
12. Record or print your settings as they are displayed
on the Properties tab for future reference.
