Marten Protection System
for BMW 3 Series (E 36/7) all left-hand drive models
(Only for use in the BMW trade organisation)
Technical knowledge is required.
Installation time approx. 3.0 hours.
The installation time can vary according to the
condition and fittings of the vehicle.
No coding of the vehicle's control units with
DIS or MoDIC is required for this retrofit package.
Cable feed-throughs into the passenger
compartment are without exception to be sealed
with appropriate sealing compound.
Lines to the control unit which are too long are to
be shortened.
All drill-holes are to be treated in accordance with
BMW corrosion-protection specifications.
The arrows shown below left in the illustrations
point in the direction of the front of the vehicle.
The magnifications in the illustrations must be
taken particular note of as they reproduce the
exact installation position.
Before fitting the high-voltage wires it is
essential to determine the body accessory
variants of the vehicle.
The high-voltage wires are supplied in a maximum
length and, as shown in the installation
instructions, have to be cut down at the colour
marks in each case according to the vehicle and
the body accessory variants. (To avoid injury, it is
essential that the cut points are deburred with a
file).
The high-voltage wires in question are designated
with capital letters (e.g. "E2", "F", "G" etc.).
All angle brackets, flat bars and clamps are, for the
purposes of simplification, designated with the
identification number which is on the part itself.
The identification numbers and their associated
measurement details are given in Chapter 10. The
data concerning the angle brackets and drillholes
always refers to the centre of the holes.
To make things easier and to give a better
overview of the vehicle variants, a general
survey of all vehicles has been included in
the installation instructions. The general
survey (Chapter 9) should be read from left
to right and used as follows:
Example (Model Z3 with M44 engine and automatic
transmission) on page 8:
At the front is installed high-voltage wire "E2", on
the right of the engine high-voltage wire "F" and on
the left of the engine high-voltage wire "G".
In this vehicle no underside panelling is retrofitted!
The two following columns show the length
specifications of the high-voltage line. The high-
voltage line from the control unit (see page 5,
item A1) is to be cut to a length of 800 mm and
provided with a terminal contact.
The remaining piece of the high-voltage line is
used to make the connecting lines between the
high-voltage wires "G" and "E2", as well as "F"
and "E2".
24
The remaining piece of this high-voltage line is cut
into lengths of 480 mm ("G" to "E2") and 500 mm
("F" to "E2") and both ends of the lines provided
with terminal contacts.
High voltage! Danger to life!
- Contact should be avoided at all costs with live
parts of the activated marten protection system.
Those especially at risk are people with weak
hearts or who have pace-makers.
- The marten protection system is activated when
the bonnet is closed and the ignition key
position is "0". It is deactivated from ignition key
position "R" and the bonnet open.
- Because the electrical systems of individual
models are being continually reworked, it is
possible that plug-in connectors (designation X)
and/or cable colours change. The current issue
of the test instructions is therefore always the
authoritative one for installing the marten
protection system.
- The high-voltage wires/connection clamps of the
marten protection system must be arranged in
such a way after having been fitted on the
vehicle underbody that they leave a minimum
clearance of 10 mm between them and all other
parts (including rubber parts) on the vehicle. If
necessary rearrange a high-voltage wire and
remove any connection clamps which are not
needed).
- In vehicles which are moved predominantly over
rough roads, the warning sticker (self-adhesive)
is to be fixed to the vehicle with 4 blind rivets
Ø 3.5 mm (not included in the installation kit).
- If the vehicle in question has an underside
panelling already fitted, this will be used for
installing the high-voltage wire.
- When all work has been concluded a
chemical engine wash should be carried out
in order to remove any existing markings
(scents) left by the marten.
