If the Transporter is taken out of service for an extended period, over the winter season for
example, then the following protective measures and preservation work are advisable:
Ideally the Transporter should be laid up in a place where it is protected against wind, weath-
er and cold.
To protect and preserve the engine: see engine operating manual.
Disconnect the earth lead at the negative terminal of the battery.
Even an entirely maintenance-free battery suffers some internal discharge. If the break in op-
eration is long enough, the battery will no longer have sufficient charge to re-start the engine.
The battery should therefore be removed from the vehicle and stored in a dry place which is
not too cold.
NOTE
In order to achieve a working life of 5–6 years for the lead-acid batteries, the charge level
should if possible not be allowed to fall below 70%. Charge the battery with a suitable charger
at intervals of about 2 months.
By storing the tyres correctly, deterioration with age can be reduced to a minimum. Whether
fitted to the vehicle or stored with or without rims, tyres should be protected against direct
sunlight. They should be kept at least 1 metre away from heat sources. A storage tempera-
ture between 15 and 20° C is ideal. Store the tyres in dry condition and keep them away from
oils, fuels, greases, paints and similar materials.
If the tyres remain on the vehicle, the air pressure should be increased by 0.5 bar.
Always stack tyres with rims horizontally, or hang them up. Place tyres without rims vertically
and turn them a little every few weeks.
In order to prevent the brake linings from sticking, do not apply the hand-brake. Secure the
vehicle with wheel chocks.
