3.1 European Type Approval

Legally, the Fast Electric Bike is no longer considered a 'bicycle' but a 'lightweight moped'.
It has European Type Approval (Class L1e-) as such. Fast Electric Bikes do have a throttle, which
allows riding them up to 20 km/h, using motor power only. This means that up to this speed your
Fast Electric Bike can be used as an E-Bike, rather than as a Pedelec. Above 20 km/h, the motor will
assist pedaling up to a speed of around 45 km/h. The maximum power of the BionX motor on your
Fast Electric Bike is limited to 250 W.
The technical equipment of these 45 km/h Fast Electric Bikes is almost identical to that on 25 km/h
Pedelecs. The following parts are additional and/or different:
• Rear view mirror,
• Insurance plate / license plate and holder for this plate,
• Throttle on the remote,
• Extra reflectors,
• Slightly different brake levers,
• Type-approval plate on the frame,
• An unique VIN number engraved on the frame (VIN = Vehicle Identification Number).
NOTICE. These additional parts are all part of the type approval. It is not allowed to remove or exchange
them for other (non-certified) equipment. This also applies to the fork, tires, headlight, rear light,
brakes, kickstand, motor, battery pack and controller.
3.2 Local legislation / rules*
• The legal rules to use a Fast Electric Bike vary per country.
You must comply with the local legal rules about the minimum age of the rider, driver license,
insurance, insurance / license plate, traffic and maximum speed regulations, etc. with regards to
the L1e type approval of your Fast Electric Bike.
• For a Fast Electric Bike, third party insurance is mandatory.
• In many countries, wearing a helmet is mandatory for these bikes.
Even, when wearing a helmet is not mandatory in your country, we strongly recommend to always wear a
helmet for your own safety.
*NOTICE. The local legislation/ rules may be subject to changes in time.

3.3 Advices for use

• Technically, riding a Fast Electric Bike is the same as riding a Pedelec bike, except that the assistance
does not stop at 25 km/h but at around 45 km/h.
• Be aware that the maximum speed of your Fast Electric Bike may not be allowed in all countries.
• Your Fast Electric Bike is still a bicycle. The bike allows riding up to 20 km/h on motor power only
(using the throttle), but this is not recommended because this strongly limits the range of the bike.
• The maximum range on one battery charge depends very much on your style of use.
• Due to the higher speed that can be reached, be prepared to find the range slightly shorter than on
regular Pedelec bikes that have a maximum assistance speed of 25 km/h.
• Be aware that other road users may not expect a bicycle to go this fast. Ride accordingly.
