In the book "Electrotherapeutic Terminology in Physi-
cal Therapy" (section on clinical Electrophysiology,
American Physical Therapy Association, March
1990) a start has been made on the standardisation
of Electrotherapeutic terminology. Their recommen-
dations have, as far as possible, been followed in
the literature associated with the Sonopuls 491. For
the sake of clarity, some of the new terms are given
below, together with the (old) terms previously used.
Terms used
• Amplitude
• Phase duration
• Phase interval
• Direct current
• Frequency modulation : Spectrum frequency

General

It is important that you read these operating instruc-
tions carefully before using the Sonopuls. Please
make sure that these instructions are available to
all personnel who operate the equipment.
For the various applications of this apparatus, please
refer to our therapy books "Low and Medium Fre-
quency Electrotherapy", reference number 1480.762
and "Ultrasound Therapy", reference number
1482.762.
Pay attention to the following before using the
Sonopuls:
1. Keep yourself informed of the contra-indications
(see pages 24, 25).
2. The apparatus may not be used in close proxim-
ity (i.e. less than 2 metres) to shortwave or mi-
crowave equipment.
The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for the
results of using this apparatus for any purposes other
than described in these operating instructions.

Installation

Do not install the unit in a location near to a heat
source such as a radiator.
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, rain, excessive
dust, dampness, mechanical vibrations and
shocks.
• Cordless telephones should not be used in close
proximity of the unit.
• This unit should not be used in so-called "wet-
rooms" (hydrotherapy rooms). The unit has to be
installed in such way that liquid cannot enter.

PRELIMINARY NOTES

Should any liquid ingress into the housing of this
equipment, unplug the unit from the wall socket (if
connected) and have it checked by an authorised
expert.

Connection

• With regard to the use of the sponge pads, please
make sure that they do not come into contact
with non-intact skin and that they are well mois-
tened with lukewarm water to avoid undesired
current densities irritate the skin and causing pain.
• Mains supply connections must comply with the
national requirements regarding medical rooms.
• Before connection of this apparatus to the sup-
ply, check that the mains voltage and frequency
stated on the type plate of the battery charger
corresponds to that of the mains supply.
• The battery charger is a part of the supply circuit
on which the safety of the equipment is partly
based. As a consequence, the approvals of the
Sonopuls 490 or Sonopuls 491 are valid in com-
bination with this particular type of battery charger
only (ENA-1810).
Do not, therefore, attempt to use any other
charger with the Sonopuls 490 or Sono-
puls 491.

Technical maintenance

We recommend to have the unit checked annually.
This may be done by your supplier, or by another
agency, authorised by the manufacturer. It is also
recommended that a record of the service history is
kept for all activities relating to service and mainte-
nance. In some countries this is even obligatory.
Maintenance and all repairs should only be carried
out by an authorised agency. The manufacturer will
not be held responsible for the results of mainte-
nance or repairs by unauthorised persons.
Opening of the equipment by unauthorised agen-
cies is not allowed and will terminate any claim to
warranty.

Current density

The particular standard for Therapeutic Electrical
Stimulation Equipment is IEC 601-2-1 0 (BS5724
part 2.1 0).The maximum permissible Current Den-
sity is 2mA R.M.S. per cm². To verify that this value
is not exceeded in electrotherapy, divide the current
output in mA by the effective electrode area in cm²;
a value of less than two should result.
Note that placing the electrodes should be done
carefully and solidly, and that the use of small elec-
trodes in combination with high intensities may cause
skin irritations or burns.
