- Tie the tension wires 21.13 to the solder tags and run them
through the split pin on the antenna tripods. Tie the S-hook
in place.
- Make up the aft long antenna 21.14 as described for 21.11
but using six beads instead of ten. Connect it permanently
to the conning tower.
Balancing
- For successful dynamic diving the residual buoyancy of the
boat must be as slight as possible; this means that the
model must float no higher than the „CWL max." level.
- The submarine will float at this level if you use the standard
lead keel 21.15, which weighs about 1250 g.
- For true-scale surface running the boat should be trimmed
to the standard CWL level.
- To achieve this trim the ballast needs to be shortened by
about 40 mm (approximately 200 g). Note that the boat will
now have higher residual buoyancy, and will affect its diving
characteristics.
- The ideal trim for the boat is a personal matter, and you
may have to vary the lead ballast slightly to achieve this.
- The last component to be fitted is the lead keel 21.15.
- Use a bradawl to pierce a hole in the centre of the rear face
of the lead and screw a self-tapping screw 21.16 into it lea-
ving about 2 mm exposed.
- Tie a 1 m length of strong string to the screw. The string
must be able to support the weight of the ballast.
- The lead keel must be installed and positioned before you
place the boat in the water.
- For the first trial run seek out a large and really clear stretch
- You are now ready to carry out the first trial run.
- With the control surfaces set as described in these instruc-
tions the model should run at a moderate speed on the sur-
face.
- To set the hydroplane control mechanism so that the sub-
marine dives dynamically as designed, offset the adjustor
screw 16.24 on the forward periscope by about 3 mm, so
that the forward hydroplanes are set to 8 - 10° down as
standard. Now move the mechanism to the rear end-point
by hand, and the hydroplanes should rise to about 15 - 20°
- The first attempts at submerging should be carried out
using speed control only.
- If adjusted correctly the boat will dive when it reaches a
moderate speed, then automatically surface without requi-
ring any deflection of the rear hydroplane. Left to its own
devices it will continue this behaviour in a regular but slow
„dolphin" pattern.
- Watch very carefully whether the screen attached to the

- Space out the insulators as shown and secure each one
with a drop of cyano.
- Before you dismantle the submarine remember to dis-
connect the rear antennas at the tripod.

of water without trailing plants and other obstructions. If you
are fortunate enough to have access to a large swimming
pool, then that is ideal.
- Prepare the boat completely, ready to run (batteries char-
ged, all functions checked, shafts greased etc.).
- At the waterside slide the lead keel into the boat to a
distance of about 25 cm. Check this with a long ruler.
- When you have screwed the hull components together the
string must exit the hull between the aft and the centre sec-
tions.
- The string can now be used to pull the ballast aft centimet-
re by centimetre.
- Inflate the boat via the valve and place it in the water.
- Install the RC-aerial 20.8 / 20.9.
- The model will initially be bow-heavy. Pull the string towards
the stern centimetre by centimetre until the longitudinal trim
is correct, i.e. so that the boat floats at the marked waterli-
ne.
- Carefully lift the boat out of the water to avoid moving the
lead keel. Push the bradawl into the lead through the hole
in the keel (already drilled) and fit the second self-tapping
screw 21.16 to secure it.
- Initially leave the string attached to the model, but shorten it
so that it cannot get tangled in the shafts or propellers.
hydroplane control mechanism moves back when the boat
dives.
- If the spring tension is too low the mechanism will move
back even when the boat is running on the surface.
- Adjust the spring tension if necessary.
- This submerge / surface cycle can be shortened or exten-
ded by controlling the rear hydroplanes.
- If you ever feel uncertain about what is happening to the
submarine, especially when running the model for the first
time, just stop the motors and the U-47 will then automati-
cally rise to the surface.
We hope you have many hours of pleasure with your U 47.
