13.9.2 Changing the gas category
Prerequisites
– The gas detector was turned on less than an hour ago.
– The automatic zero calibration on the sensor was
performed less than an hour ago (see "Special feature of
the Polytron 8310", page 24).
– The gas concentration measures by the gas detector is
below 10 %LEL (apply zero gas to the sensor if
necessary).
1. Turn off the alarm activation for the gas detector (see
"Switching the alarms on or off", page 32).
2. Select Settings > Sensor > DSIR Category and confirm.
The gas category is displayed on the instrument.
The next steps are carried out on the sensor.
3. To select the gas category on the sensor, tap the
symbol with the magnetic wand.
START is displayed on the gas detector.
4. Remove the magnetic wand.
The sensor switches to an output signal that
represents the gas category currently set:
Output signal 20 %LEL: Methane gas category
Output signal 40 %LEL: Propane gas category
Output signal 60 %LEL: Ethene (ethylene) gas
category
5. This output signal is maintained for 30 seconds. During
this period, the next gas can be selected by placing the
magnetic wand on the area marked with the
The sensor's output signal then switches to the value
that matches the newly selected gas category. If no
further input with the magnetic wand takes place for
more than 30 seconds, the setting is saved.
6. Check the span calibration on the gas detector (see "Span
calibration", page 25)
7. Turn on the alarm activation for the gas detector (see
"Switching the alarms on or off", page 32).
The setting on the sensor can result in an incorrect gas
category being displayed in the DSIR Category menu
item or that a change in gas category is no longer visible.

13.10.1 Gas settings
This function sets the gas type, measuring range and units of
measurement. Only certain sensors support these settings.
1. Select Settings > Sensor > Gas settings and confirm.
The current measured gas is displayed.
2. Select a measured gas from the list and confirm.
The current unit of measurement is displayed.
3. Select the unit of measurement from the list and confirm.
If the unit of measurement is set to %LEL, %UEG, or
%LIE, the category will be displayed. Continue with
step 4.
Otherwise the current full scale deflection is displayed.
Continue with step 6.

Factory default settings
14.1 Unchangeable settings for relay, LED,
and alarm
Setting
Fault relay:
Energized / Normally Open
Yellow LED:
Lit if a fault message is available
Red LED:
Single flash if A1 alarm is present. Dou-
ble flash if A2 alarm is present. If an
alarm is configured as acknowledge-
able and the alarm is acknowledged,
single/double flash changes to continu-
ously lit.
Alarm Hierarchy
A2 overrides A1 on the LED. However,
the A1 and A2 relays operate inde-
pendently. (Example: if A1 is acknowl-
edgeable, A2 is not, and the gas
concentration is such that it triggers A1
and A2: acknowledging the alarm will
cause the A1 relay to release. But the
red LED continues its double flash as
long as the state that triggers the A2
alarm persists.
