Adjusting slit lamp and eyepieces

Before treating a patient with laser radiation, you should be fully
familiar with the use of the slit lamp. You should therefore carefully
read the user manual, and in particular the safety notes.
• Ensure that the eyepieces are inserted fully and that the eyecups are
pulled out (pushed in for spectacle wearers).
• Rotate the diopter setting ring on both eyepieces fully in the "+"
direction (counter clockwise).
• Place a sheet of paper (business card or similar) in the object plane
of the slit lamp.
• Centre the slit projector and binocular tube to the slit lamp base.
• Select the highest magnification setting on the slit lamp.
• Open the slit.
• Look through the eyepieces. Focus on the surface of the paper using
the joystick and lock the slit lamp base.
• Close the illuminating slit to a narrow line.
• Select the lowest magnification setting on the slit lamp.
• Looking through the eyepieces, turn the diopter setting ring on both
eyepieces in the "-" direction (clockwise) until the surface of the
sheet of paper is sharply in focus.
• Select the other magnification settings on the slit lamp.
• The image should remain in focus for all magnifications. If it does
not, the procedure should be repeated.
• Make a note of the eyepiece settings for future use. For future
sessions, the eyepieces must simply be adjusted to this value.
Note:
If several physicians use this instrument, it is advisable to draw
up a table with the individual refractive powers and keep it in a
handy location near the instrument.
