5.3 Density Determination

5.3.1 Determining Density of Solid Objects
Preparation
In the following description, distilled water is used .
Procedure
Place the beaker with the larger diameter (d 90 mm) on the center of the bridge
t
Fill the beaker until the distilled water is approximately 5 mm below the rim .
t
Add three drops of surfactant to the distilled water .
t
Attach the thermometer to the rim of the beaker using the retainer clip .
t
Clean the sample holder with a solvent (paying particular attention to the
t
immersed wires) and hook on to the frame .
Measurement Procedure
The sample weight must be determined in the air .
Procedure
Tare the balance .
t
Place the sample on the frame weighing pan and weigh it .
t
Make a note of the weight value W (a) .
t
Determining the Buoyancy
G = W (a) – W (fl)
Procedure
Tare the balance with the sample on the frame weighing pan .
t
Place the sample in the sample holder . Remove the iron pan from the measuring
t
device and ensure that no additional air bubbles become attached upon
re-immersion in the liquid; If possible, add the sample directly using tweezers
or similar .
Make a note of the absolute value of buoyancy G, with a minus sign in front .
