Exhaust Noise Inspector Type 3638 – User Manual
Welcome
This manual describes the use of Exhaust Noise Inspector Types 3638 A and B – a measure-
ment system in accordance with the standards: 70/157/EEC and ISO 5130:2002 (working draft),
for determination of exhaust noise levels emitted by stationary vehicles (engine sweep test).
The procedures explained in this manual apply generally to all road vehicles covered by stand-
ards and directives, such as trucks, personal cars, motorbikes and mopeds.
About Type 3638 A/B
Type 3638 A is a complete all-in-one system including Brüel & Kjær's reliable Sound Level
Meter Type 2238, packaged in a sturdy carrying case. The system is designed for simple and
automatic measurement of exterior exhaust noise levels from road vehicles under stationary
conditions. Simultaneous measurement of engine RPM levels and exhaust noise with the same
microphone allows local authorities and police inspectors to perform one-man operations with
very little setup. In additon, Type 3638's built-in controller provides prompt and easy-to-read
display and print features for immediate test reporting.
Type 3638 B is the same basic system, with an optional sound level meter.
