4.1
Start of Operation, Switching the Machine on
Before the machine is turned on, check the oil level of the
hydraulic unit and top up with HF-E 15 hydraulic oil as
needed. A visor that allows checking the oil level is visible

in an opening at the maintenance door (refer to the figure
in Sect. 3.2.2).
The heating element surfaces have to be free of grease and
clean, or be cleaned. The transport locks that secure heating
element, facing tool, and control terminal must be unlocked

before operating the machine, if it was just transported.
Place the machine on a level surface and ensure it cannot slide. Before
the machine can be used for the first time, it has to be leveled. To level
it, adjust the height of the legs of the machine. All height-adjustable
legs must sit firmly on the floor.
Provided all occupational and operation safety requirements, as indi-
cated in Sect. 2, the machine can be connected to the power supply
and turned on at the On/Off switch.
It has to be ensured that the voltage of the power source the
machine is connected to corresponds to its rated voltage.

Using the Integrated Heating Element Temperature Control
When the machine is connected to the power supply, the control elec-
tronics runs an auto-test of the three-digit 7-segment display screen.
This is indicated by three short flashes of all segments. After the test,
the software switches to control mode, which is recognizable from
the display now showing a number. This number corresponds to the
currently set nominal temperature of the heating element.
As long as the actual temperature of the heating element is not equal
to the set nominal temperature (lower or higher), the display screen
flashes. This indicates in most cases that the heating element is heating
up. When the nominal temperature is reached, provided it is reached
within the specified tolerances and time delays, the display screen
stops flashing and the heating element can be used.
The value of the nominal temperature can be changed using the
pushbuttons for temperature increase or decrease, either by pressing
them repeatedly or by holding them down. The settable temperatures
range from 190°C through 250°C. When this setting was changed, the
screen starts flashing again, until the heating element has reached
the new nominal temperature. The new value is saved to memory and
can be used again after the machine is switched on again. To see the
current actual temperature of the heating element, hold down both
temperature pushbuttons. A dot in the lower right-hand corner of the
display indicates that the actual temperature is showing.

Welding Process Overview
The welding process proper, after component butt facing and align-
ment check, has the following four stages, or phases, which are also
illustrated by the time-and-pressure diagram below.
• Bead Build-up Stage – In this stage, t
ponents are pressed against the heating element and heated to
