8. Start-up
Do not start the pump until it has been
Warning
primed and vented.
If run dry there is danger of damage to the
pump bearings and shaft seal.
Pay attention to the direction of the vent
hole and take care to ensure that the
escaping water does not cause injury to
persons or damage to the motor or other
components. In hot water installations,
special attention should be paid to the risk
of injury caused by scalding hot water.
HPC/HPC 3 and 5:
For these pumps, it is advisable to open the bypass
valve during start-up. The bypass valve connects the
suction and discharge sides of the pump, thus making
the filling procedure easier. When the operation is
stable, the bypass valve can be closed. When pumping
water with a high air content, it is an advantage for the
by-pass valve to remain open if the operating pressure
is less than 6 bar.
If the operating pressure exceeds 6 bar, the by-pass
valve must be closed, since otherwise the material at
the opening can be destroyed by wear owing to the high
liquid velocity.

9. Maintenance
Before each disassembly, lock the intake
and discharge sides, unscrew the safety
guards and empty the pump (free of pres-
sure). Before starting work on the pump,
make sure that no power is supplied to the
pump and that it cannot be accidentally
switched on. Maintenance may only be
carried out by qualified personnel.
Pump bearings and shaft seal are maintenance-free.
If the pump is to be drained for a long period of inactivity,
remove one of the coupling guards to inject a few drops of
silicone oil on the shaft between the pump head and the
coupling. This will prevent the shaft seal faces from
sticking.
When fitting the coupling guards, make sure that they are
centred vertically in the recesses in the pump head.
Motor bearings:
Motors which are not fitted with grease nipples are
maintenance-free.
A slight leakage in the GLRD is necessary for lubrication.
Residues can be visible from frost protection additives
or similar media.
If the pump is not used for an extended period, it should
be put into operation briefly occasionally to prevent
increased leakage in the sliding ring seal.
Motors fitted with grease nipples should be lubricated
with a high-temperature lithium-based grease, see the
instructions on the fan cover.
In the case of seasonal operation (motor is idle for mor
than 6 mounths of the year), it is recommended to grease
the motor when the pump is taken out of operation.

10. Frost protection
Pumps which are not being used during periods of frost
should be drained to avoid damage.
Drain the pump by loosening the vent screw in the pump
head and by removing the drain plug from the base.
Care must be taken to ensure that the
escaping water does not cause injury to
persons or damage to the motor or other
components.
In hot water installations, special attention
should be paid to the risk of injury caused
by scalding hot water.
Tighten the vent screw and replace the drain plug before
using the pump again.

11. Service
11.1 Contaminated pump
If a pump has been used for a liquid which
is injurious to health or toxic, the pump
will be classified as contaminated.
If Biral is requested to service the pump, Biral must
be contacted with details about the pumped liquid, etc.
before the pump is returned for service. Otherwise Biral
can refuse to accept the pump for service.
Possible costs of returning the pump are paid by the
customer.
However, any application for service (no matter to
whom it may be made) must include details about the
pumped liquid if the pump has been used for liquids
which are injurious to health or toxic.
11.2 Spare parts/accessories
We expressly draw attention to the fact that spare parts
and accessories not supplied by us have not been tested
and approved by us.
The installation and/or use of such products may
therefore adversely alter and hence impair the design
characteristics of the pump.
Biral can accept no liability and give no warranty at all
for damage arising through the use of non-original
spare parts and accessories.
Faults which cannot be eliminated by the customer
himself should be rectified only by Biral Service or
authorized specialist companies.
Please give an exact description in the event of a fault
so that our service engineers can be prepared and can
equip themselves with the appropriate spare parts.
Please see the rating plate for the technical data of the
unit.

13. Disposal
Disposal of this product or parts of it must be carried out
according to the following guidelines:
1. Use the local public or private waste collection service.
2. In case such a waste collection service does not exist
or cannot handle the materials used in the product,
please deliver the product or any hazardous materials
from it to your nearest Biral company or service
workshop.
