PERIODIC CHECKS
In compliance with use, and however at least once a year, it isnecessary to

have qualified staff check the status of wear of the fifth wheel. To do this, it

is recommended to proceed with the following checks and controls.

Check shock absorbing system
Brake the unloaded semi-trailer and move the tractor slowly. If movements of the fifth
wheel plate are detected with respect to the upper supports of 3 mm replace pads,
see chap. 7.1 REPLACING THE PADS page 27/35.
General fifth wheel check
A)
Check that the fifth wheel plate (8) and the semi-trailer counter-plate do not have
wear and deformations such to compromise use;
B)
Check that the semi-trailer articulation kingpin is perfectly perpendicular to the
counter-plate;
C)
Make sure there are no cracks or start of breakage in the fifth wheel plate (8)
and supports (15), see page 07/35.
Check wear
A)
Check that the wear of the fifth wheel closure mechanism (2c, 7, 11b) and of the
semi-trailer articulation kingpin lie within the limits illustrated in the figure.
