Takeoff in stronger wind (Reverse takeoff)
The reverse pull-up is chiefly recommended in stronger wind. During
the pull-up the pilot should walk towards the glider as necessary.
Turning round and taking off with the EPSILON 6 is straightforward.
Tip: In stronger winds the EPSILON 6 can easily be pulled
up in reverse by using only the inner pair of split A-risers.
Less of the wing area will inflate, so less drag is produced.
Tip: Playing with the glider on flat ground in the wind deve-
lops a good feeling for the wing. You can get to know your
EPSILON 6's characteristics very well on the ground, and can
safely investigate the takeoff, stalling, shooting forwards and
collapse behaviours. The ADVANCE test team have a motto:
an hour on the ground is worth ten flights.
Normal flight
In calm air the EPSILON 6 best glide is achieved with fully released
brakes. Light braking brings the glider to its minimum sink condition.
When flying into a headwind, through descending air, or when
proceeding to the next thermal, glide performance will be distinctly
improved by appropriate use of the speed system. The SPI is there
to help you do this. See also section «Speed-Performance-Indicator
(SPI)».
Despite the wing's high stability an active flying style is recommended
- collapses can be almost completely avoided. This means keeping
the lightly-braked glider directly above you, in other words, countering
roll and pitch disturbances.
thermal; pilot swings forwards) the brake lines should be
temporarily released fully, until the glider returns to its
overhead position.
swings back) the wing should briefly be braked more.
Be careful not to get below minimum speed, and don't overreact with
the brakes.
Turning flight
The EPSILON 6 has short and precise steering travel; it reacts very
directly and progressively to increasing control application. Steering
can be effectively assisted by active weight shift. The angle of bank
