6. Loosen the reversible carbide knives by means
of the spanner included in the delivery specifi-
cation and turn by 90° before tightening them
(4 Nm) again or replace by new reversible knives
if they have already been turned over three times.
7. For cutting tenons, loosen cutter ring (no. 38) to
move it on cutter head (no. 37) until the front
edge of the cutter ring indicates the requested
tenon length "t" (see ill. 6) on the scale of the
cutter head. Then, tighten the cutter ring again
(15 Nm). For cutting lap joints, take off the cut-
ter ring completely. This is only possible in one
direction because of the built-in protection
against torsion between the two parts.
8. Clean the tool spindle and clamping surfaces of
chips and dust clinging to them and mount the
tool. Make sure that the two driving pins of the
spindle catch into the two bores of the tool.
Insert clamping screw (no. 41) with clamping
disk (no. 42) and tighten.
9. Return the cutting assembly to initial position by
pressing push-button "DOWN (AB)" and "BACK-
WARD (ZURÜCK)" (no. 10 - ill. 5).

4.2 Machine care

Regular cleaning of the machine increases service
life, prevents unnecessary repairs and is a pre-
requisite of maximum cutting quality. The MAFELL
tenon cutting machine ZAF 160 is designed with a
low maintenance requirement. Depending on the
degree of soiling, it should be cleaned at least once
a week. This specially applies to the guideways of
the cutting assembly and to the spindles for the
dimensional settings.
Chips and dust have to be removed by means of a
vacuum cleaner. For removal of resin, a resin re-
mover has to be used best. Cleaned parts must be
treated with an oil impregnated cleaning cloth to
protect them against rust.
In order to prevent the motors from overheating,
regularly check that no dust has accumulated on
the ventilation apertures of the motor. Always use a
vacuum cleaner for removal, since when blowing
off dust will get inside the motor.
The spindle nuts have to be lubricated if required at
the two nipples provided for this purpose with acid-
free grease by means of a grease gun.
The ball bearings used are greased for life and
generally do not require any maintenance.
Only use our special grease, order number 049 040
(1 kg tin), for all lubrication spots.
After a prolonged period of operation, users are re-
commended to call the MAFELL after-sales service
to have the machine checked.

4.3 Tool care

The cutting tools must be freed from resin regularly
as clean tools improve the cutting quality. For
cleaning only acid-free but not highly alkaline
cleaning agents may be used. This can be done by
soaking the cutting tools for 24 hours in paraffin or
commercially available resin remover.

4.4 Motor brake

The drive motor of the cutting tool is equipped with
a mechanical spring-actuated brake which is
activated automatically as soon as the machine is
switched off. This reduces the cutter head decele-
ration time to less than 10 seconds.
Switching on and off the motor frequently may
result in an overheating and consequently a dam-
age of the brake. It is therefore advisable to switch
on and off the motor and to brake not more than
40 times per hour.
The brake is designed for approx. 30,000 braking
operations. The deceleration time increases with
pro-gressive wear of the brake disk. If the decele-
ration time exceeds 10 seconds, the MAFELL after-
sales service has to be informed.
