1.6 Machine description

The tenon cutting machine ZAF 200 is designed for
cutting straight tenons and oblique tenons up to 60°
max. quickly, exactly, efficiently and properly in-
cluding an all-around chamfer and automatic final
trimming in case of oblique tenons. Only a quick
and easy tool change is required for the production
of lap joints. Regardless of the operation to be car-
ried out, i. e. whether cutting straight or oblique
tenons, the workpiece always remains in the same
position and does not need to be moved with a
great effort. This is possible because the the com-
plete machining assembly can be turned around.
The supporting table of 3 m (9.9 ft) length permits
safe support of the workpiece to be cut of which the
dimensions can be 400 x 200 mm (15
with straight tenons and 200 x 200 mm (7
in.) with oblique tenons of 60°. The integrated dou-
ble stop and the precise scale allow to execute an
exact linear measurement even when cutting on
both workpiece ends.
The combination cutting tool specially developed
for the ZAF can easily be converted to various
lengths of tenons and also to lap joint cutting after
removal of the cutter ring. It is equipped with
exchangeable, reversible carbide knives which can
be turned over three times. Thus, a long tool life
without changing the knives is guaranteed.
The machine is fitted with easily accessible operat-
ing elements which, together with the easy to read
scales and the clearly visible line laser, allow the
precise setting of the desired tenon geometry or
the lap joint cuts.
All the electric switches required for the control of
the machine are clearly arranged on the control
panel situated at the workplace. The various oper-
ating modes such as setting up, cutting tenons and
lap joints are selected by means of the mode select
switch. After activation of the start command, all
functions will be carried out automatically:
starting of the driving motor for the cutting tool,
cutting of the tenon shape includingfinal trimming,
shouldering and chamfering, return of the tool to
initial position and stopping of the driving motor by
means of a brake.
The ZAF 200 Vario offers an additional feeding
speed reduction down to 50%.
The powerful drive unit reliably meets the high
requirements of the cutting operations usual in
carpentry.
The chips produced during operation are either ejec-
ted to the bottom through the adjustable flaps or in
case of stationary operation in a carpentry shop dis-
posed of via the standard hose connectors by con-
necting the machine to an internal extractor unit.

1.7 Safety devices

When designing this new machine great impor-
tance was attached to best possible working condi-
tions starting from numerous mechanical and elec-

trical safety devices up to the consideration of er-

gonomical principles as well as measures for the

reduction of noise and dust emission. The machine
has been equipped with all the safety devices
required within its use according to the intended
purpose where any possible dangers could not be
eliminated already by its basic design. The main
protection devices are listed as follows:
1. Cutting tool:
Designed according to EN 847-1 with cutting depth
limitation and suitable for mechanical feeding. Pro-
tection against detaching when accelerating and
stopping due to form-closed connection of the tool
and the supporting rear flange by means of 2 driv-
ing pins.
2. Protection against contact with the tool:
Closed housing except the opening required for the
feeding of workpieces. The door of this housing,
provided for the access to the operating elements
for the setting of the tenon thickness, is locked by
means of a safety switch of category 2 which is
con-nected to the driving motor for the cutting tool
and to the feed drive. When opening the door both
drives are switched off and the tool will be stopped
within approx. 3 seconds by the automatic brake.
3. Protection of the opening for the feeding of the
workpiece:
The feed opening can be adjusted to the respective
workpiece dimensions by means of a horizontally
and a vertically adjustable slide.
