The encoder mechanics and its connection elements can be
included as failure-safe in the safety assessment if the mech-
anical limits in chapter Technical Data [} 42] and the proper
assembly in chapter Mechanical Installation [} 45] have
been complied with.

3.4.3 Safety Functions

The encoder allows supporting safety subfunctions according
to EN 61800-5-2 with regard to rotational speed, direction of
rotation, standstill and relative position, for example:

3.5 Explosion protection

The encoders are suitable for operation in explosives atmo-
spheres, in compliance with the following classifications.
3.5.1 Classification
The encoders with EX marking on the device meet the re-
quirements of:
• Directive 2014/34/EU for explosives atmospheres.

3.5.2 Operating conditions

The increased hazard in potentially explosive atmospheres
requires the careful observance of the instructions and warn-
ings.
Explosion-proof electrical devices are subject to the stand-
ards of the EN 60079 series. They may only be used in po-
tentially explosive atmospheres in accordance with the provi-
sions of the competent supervisory authority. This authority is
in charge of the determination of the explosion danger and of
the zone classification. The ignition protection category and
the temperature class are specified on the type plate.
