It is advisable to carry out two measurements per axle (one on the
top end of the reference plate and one on its lower end) and then
compare them with the other side of the vehicle.
Now carry out the first measurement by bringing the pointer as near
as possible to the top end of the reference plate-point. This setting
should then be fixed by means of the knurled screws. (Fig.9)
After performing and saving the measurement, remove the
measurement unit by removing the knurled screws from the measuring
tool's sickle-shaped housing so as to remove the black ruler-plate
required for the height adjustment. Be very careful not to change the
newly-performed measurement; now install the measurement unit on
the opposite axle into the previously mounted measuring tool's sickle-
shaped housing. (Fig.10)
Now check and compare the distance of the pointer from the
reference point.
Repeat the aforesaid procedure by measuring/comparing the values
of the lower end of the reference plate-point. (Fig.11)
Assessment: if there is a high divergence (e.g.: distance of the
pointer from the reference plate-point with respect to the opposite
side) this implies that the axle/king pin body which was analyzed at
first (on the side of the car where the camber divergence had been
detected) is deformed and therefore must be replaced.
Type 2. The shock absorber is inserted into the king
pin and secured by means of a clamping
(Fig.12).
In the case of this type of Mac Pherson shock absorbers, work without
the reference plate-point (1952 006 639).
Start the measurement on the side where the inclination measurement
was within limits, i.e. where you assume there is no damage from
mechanical impacts caused by external forces.
Place the measurement unit's pointer directly on the outside of the king
pin's fixing hole and set the adjustment/measurement. (Fig.13)
Repeat the measurement on the opposite axle as well. The same
aforesaid advice always applies so as not to alter the acquired
measurement.
Assessment: if the end of the pointer indicates a different point or
if the distance is visibly different (Fig.14), this means that the first king
pin that had been checked is deformed and must be replaced.
