CREOSOTE FORMATION AND REMOVAL

When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors
which combine with expelled moisture to form creosote. These vapors
condense in the relatively cooler chimney fl ue of a slow burning fi re and
when ignited, make an extremely hot fi re. Check your chimney from
creosote and soot build-up daily, until a safe frequency for cleaning
is established (minimum once a year). Be aware that the hotter the
fi re, the less creosote is deposited, and weekly cleanings might be
necessary in mild weather, even though substantially longer period
without cleaning may be suffi cient in colder months.
Also note that small intense fi res are preferable to large smoldering
ones to reduce the amount of creosote deposited.
If accumulation is excessive, clean the chimney. You may want to
call a professional chimney sweep to clean it. Both the chimney and
the appliance have to be cleaned at least once a year or as often as
necessary.

9.8.1 MAINTENANCE OF THE EXCHANGERS

The evacuation pipe and the exchangers should be inspected regularly during the burning season. Easy
access is provided (without the use of tools); simply unscrew the common knob on the exchangers access
door, Figure 1.
Before cleaning the three exchanger pipes move the upper plate of the combustion chamber forward (see
Figure 2). Using the scraper, clean the three exchanger pipes. The accumulated dirt in the lateral exchangers
will fall into the combustion chamber; the dirt in the central exchanger will have to be removed from the front
or the back of the furnace. Then, ensure that the upper plate is free of ashes. Do not forget to push the upper
plate back to it's original position. Finally, close the exchanger access door. Regular cleaning will ensure the
greatest operating effi ciency.
