Lubricating the Saw Chain and
Guide Bar
14.4.1
Bar and Chain Lubricant
WARNING
■ Never operate your saw without bar and chain
lubrication. If the chain runs dry, the cutting
attachment will be damaged beyond repair
within a very short time. A damaged chain
may break, resulting in severe or fatal per‐
sonal injury. Always check chain lubrication
and the oil level in the tank before starting
work and periodically during work.
WARNING
■ Never use waste oil to lubricate your STIHL
saw chain and guide bar. Repeated contact
with waste oil can cause skin cancer. More‐
over, waste oil is environmentally harmful.
Bar and chain oil lubricates and cools the rotat‐
ing saw chain. The service life of the chain and
guide bar depends on the quality of the lubricant.
It is therefore essential to use only a specially
formulated chain lubricant.
► For automatic and reliable lubrication of the
chain and guide bar, use only an environmen‐
tally compatible quality chain and bar lubri‐
cant. STIHL recommends using rapidly biode‐
gradable STIHL BioPlus.
NOTICE
■ Biodegradable chain oil must be resistant to
aging, since it will otherwise quickly turn to
resin. This results in hard deposits that are dif‐
ficult to remove, especially in the area of the
chain drive and chain. It may even cause the
oil pump to seize.
NOTICE
■ Waste oil does not have the necessary lubri‐
cating properties and is unsuitable for chain
lubrication.

Filling the Chain Oil Tank
To fill the chain oil tank:
► Switch off the chain saw,
► Engage the chain brake,

► Clean the area around the oil filler cap with a
slightly dampened cloth.
► Turn the oil filler cap counterclockwise until it
can be removed.
► Remove the oil filler cap and fill the tank with
chain oil.
► Take care not to spill chain oil while refilling
the tank.
► Do not overfill the tank. Leave approximately
0.5 in. (13 mm) of air space.
To close the tank:
► Position the oil filler cap on the oil tank filler
neck and press it down while turning it clock‐
wise until it is tight.

Engaging the Chain Brake
WARNING
■ The chain brake will operate only if it has been
properly maintained and the front hand guard
has not been modified,
WARNING
■ No chain brake device prevents kickback. This
device is designed to reduce the risk of kick‐
back injury, if activated, in certain kickback sit‐
uations. For the chain brake to remain in good
working order, it must be properly maintained,
6.2.
In the event of a kickback, the chain brake is
designed to engage if the left hand contacts the
front hand guard and pushes it forward.
