The axle Shafts are fragile and break in particular due to the vibrations generated by the transmission brake.
To replace a wheel shaft, remove the wheel on the affected side, but if the shaft is broken, you often have to
disassemble both shafts to extract the broken piece.
To dismantle the shaft:
- Release the pin at the end of the wheel shaft (see chapter on brakes).
- Loosen the nut.
- Remove the drum with an extractor (hub puller).
- Remove the drum.
- Loosen the nut of the bearing cage with a spanner wrench.
- Take out the wheel shaft using an inertial extractor.
These operations are easy to perform ... provided you have specific extractors.
Replacing a wheel shaft bearing
In most cases, it must be removed with a press. So entrust this work to a mechanic if you do not have one
because you risk damaging or even matting the thread.
Always reassemble a sealed bearing.
For reassembly, proceed in the reverse order. Check that the cones (wheel shaft and hub) are in good
condition, polish and if necessary polish the two cones with lapping paste before fitting the drum. Also check the
condition of the key and replace the nut if it is damaged.
Do not reverse the right and left drums! Check that the tightening is done " to the right" (clockwise from left
to right)
Tighten carefully and forcefully, do not forget the pin and check that it is correctly tightened after about fifty
kilometers.
