3 a - Fuel
No filter was originally fitted, except sometimes 'a small copper filter housed in the connecting banjo of the
carburetor fuel line. filters to be kept and cleaned from time to time. But with oxidized tanks, attacked by
particularly corrosive modern gasolines, it is wise to fit one upstream of the carburetor. The assembly should
allow a cluster of particles to be seen upstream of the filter element. This will allow it to be changed before it is
completely clogged.
In addition, a traditional decanter with its removable glass jar is desirable.
For your safety, do not forget to often check the tightness of the supply circuit: hoses and reservoirs and
change your fuel tap if it leaks, or even tighten the tap gland.
3 b - Fuel tank
Despite its manufacture with a sheet metal covered with tin, an original tank often has some rust deposits that
are difficult to remove. The healthy exterior appearance does not allow to judge the interior state.
There remains a solution to save it, the chemical treatment which includes a phosphate rust remover and
anticorrosion resins with their hardener.
No need to open the tank: insert small bolts inside, agitate for a long time to "scrape the walls", then rinse with
gasoline.
Then pour the resin which will line all the walls, shaking the tank in all directions. Take the precaution of
replacing the valve with a temporary plug for this operation, and plug the filler opening.
Pay attention to the lifespan of such a type of treatment.
3 c - Choice of gasoline,
It is essential to choose gasoline with a minimum of ethanol, therefore SP98; Because of its vegetable
component (methanol), the 95 transforms the artificial rubber hoses (neoprene) into sticky chewing gum which
clogs everything in its path On the other hand when you leave SP95 in the tank for a long time. it breaks down
and on restarting can cause among other things a sticking of the valves.
Of course, the fuel lines of our 5 HP are made of copper.... Sometimes odd shapes; to give them the correct
shape, it suffices to anneal them; ... And pass them as far as possible off the exhaust .
3 d - Additives
Broad topic ! A whole business flourished with the disappearance of "unleaded". We are offered cylinder head
repairs with valve seats supporting unleaded. We are sold additives to be dosed religiously.
Who to believe?
On the other hand, in our machines it is advisable to add 1% 2-stroke engine oil or engine oil... but to consume
"in moderation" so as not to clog the spark plugs.
1% = 1 Cl or 10 cm3 or 10gr per liter = one tablespoon per liter.
