4 – TIMING OF THE DISTRIBUTION
If you dismantle your engine, normally the gears are marked by a punch on one of the gears and two blows on
the other which give you the correct fit.
... but sometimes they are not marked, so mark the positions of the gears with a paint mark or a punch.

Before any reassembly, check the general condition of the pinions. If in doubt, seek the advice of a "pro" on
their wear and if necessary, opt for new ones.
Concerning the adjustment of the clearance between the pinions: a sheet of cigarette paper must pass without
a mark.
5 - CHASSIS
It supports and assembles all the elements of the 5 HP, so it must be given paramount importance in a
restoration. Examination of the deformations of the chassis is not difficult but it requires operating on a
perfectly flat surface, see a bodybuilder's measuring plate
The basic material is simple: thin twine with good tensile strength qualities will allow you to control the
squareness, alignment and good symmetry of the frame. Mason's twine is particularly suitable.
6 - STEERING
6 a – Steering box Lubricate the box well every 600 kilometers.
Do not be afraid if your steering box has a slight play.
To adjust the play of a box you have to disassemble it, then adjust / replace the eccentric bronze bushings of
the sector and replace / machine a thick washer to remove the play side of the sector.
Delicate and complicated!

6 b - Steering ball joints
The cause of significant vibrations is often the passage of second gear or roll in a hole at low speed.
You can decrease them as well as the play in your direction by controlling the play of your four ball joints.
All you have to do is screw the cap of the ball cages back on slightly, and you will temporarily reduce the play
(note: it is essential not to block the ball joint!). But it will not be easy if the ball joint is worn and oval ...
For a perfect and reliable adjustment, put four new ball joints and do not hesitate to also change the cages if
they are too worn.
