Undertake pre-use checks on Air Delivery Unit assembly as outlined in the appropriate
user instruction.
Remove any protective film from the visor
Headtop adjustment
The headtop should be adjusted to give the best face seal and field of vision. To adjust
the head suspension, rotate the ratchet knob to tighten/loosen the suspension. A size
reducing ratchet comfort pad may be required to improve fit and stability. Peel off the
backing on the comfort pad and attach to the ratchet back plate.
The height on the head and the balance of the headtop can be adjusted by
tightening/loosening the fabric straps to raise/lower the headtop (Fig 1) (M-100 Series
only). Alternatively, the suspension headband can be adjusted in four locations (Fig 2).
Each position can be adjusted independently to give a custom fit.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
DONNING
1. Select an approved breathing tube (Please see 3M M-Series Reference Leaflet for list
of 3M approved breathing tubes) and connect top end to the headtop assembly. Please
see Technical Specification for breathing tube lengths. (Note: An adaptor may be required
with some breathing tubes – see Reference Leaflet for details). Inspect the gasket
located on the bayonet end of the breathing tube (i.e. the end that connects to the
Powered Air Turbo) for signs of wear or damage. If the seal is worn or damaged, the
breathing tube should be replaced.
2. Connect the bottom end of the breathing tube to the outlet of the Air Filter Unit
/Regulator.
3. Adjust and fit the Air Filter Unit / Regulator as outlined in the appropriate User
Instruction.
4. Ensure the visor is in the raised position and fit headtop. Ensure headtop is held firm
and comfortable. If necessary adjust headtop as described earlier.
5. Switch on the Air Filter Unit or connect the compressed air supply tube to the
Regulator.
6. (A) M-100/M-200/M-300 Series. Lower the visor into the down position by pulling on
the loop located on the face seal so that the face seal is under the chin. Check face seal
is correctly positioned all around the face.
(B) M-400 Series. Lower the visor frame into the closed position. Tighten the adjustable
chord on the inner shroud until there is less than a two finger gap between your skin and
the inner shroud.
^ Always properly assemble and wear both the inner and outer shroud.
^ Ensure the visor frame firmly latches in the closed position. Replace worn or
damaged parts if required.
7. Ensure at least minimum airflow into the headtop is achieved and adjust for maximum
comfort – see appropriate User Instruction.
8 . If needed, lift the visor and adjust the airflow deflector. When fully open, more airflow
is directed across the face. When partially closed, a portion of air is directed towards the
visor. After adjusting, lower the visor back into the down position (M-100/M-300 Series) or
closed position (M-400 Series).
IN USE
Use in the power / air supply off state is not normal, there may be a rapid build up
of carbon dioxide, depletion of oxygen and little or no protection is provided,
vacate the contaminated area immediately.
Take care to prevent the breathing tube from becoming looped around protruding objects.
If this should occur vacate the contaminated area and check apparatus is undamaged. If
during use the air supply stops or is reduced, vacate the contaminated area immediately
and investigate the cause. The 'in-use' life of the product will vary with frequency and
conditions of use. Headtops used in aggressive environments or outdoors in direct
sunlight may need to be replaced more frequently than headtops used occasionally
indoors. 3M recommends a maximum life (shelf-life plus in-use life) of 5 years from the
date of manufacture when stored in accordance with the recommended storage
conditions. Note: Most plastic components have a moulded in date of manufacture and
must be replaced as described above regardless of outward appearance.
^ Do not use beyond the maximum life of the product.
DOFFING
Do not remove the headtop or turn off the air supply until you have vacated the
contaminated area.
1. M-100/M-200/M-300 Series. Grasp the face seal, lift the visor and lift the headtop off the
head.
M-400 Series. Loosen the inner shroud, grasp the visor surround and lift the visor, then
lift the headtop off the head.
2. Switch off the Air Filter Unit or disconnect the compressed air supply tube from the
Regulator.
3. Unbuckle the waist belt.
NOTE If the respirator has been used in an area that has caused it to become
contaminated with a substance requiring special decontamination procedures it
should be placed in a suitable container and sealed until it can be decontaminated
or discarded.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
^ Use only the cleaning processes and agents described in this section to clean
the product.
Use a clean cloth dampened with a mild solution of water and liquid household soap.
Do not use petrol, chlorinated degreasing fluids (such as trichloroethylene), organic
solvents or abrasive cleaning agents to clean any part of the equipment.
To disinfect use wipes as detailed in Reference Leaflet. Allow product to dry before use.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance, servicing and repair must only be carried out by properly trained personnel.
^ Use of unapproved parts or unauthorised modification could result in danger to
life or health and can invalidate any warranty.
